Greetings from Toronto, Canada.
I am looking for relations / researchers of my ROPER family of farmers from Chideock and Mappercombe, in the parish of Powerstock, in Dorset. John ROPER junior (1768 - 1837) of Chideock married Jane SYMONDS (c1782 - 1855) in Pilsdon, in 1804. They lived in Chideock till about 1811, when they moved to farm in Mappercombe, in the parish of Powerstock, Dorset. John and Jane were buried in Chideock. John and Jane had issue, including:
1. Jane ROPER (1805 - 1877), born in Chideock, who married John PITFIELD (c1800 - 1854), farmer, of Eype, Symondsbury, Dorset; they had issue;
2. John Farwell ROPER (1807 - c1865), born in Chideock, who married Harriet DUNNING of Witherstone; they farmed in Netherbury, Dorset, where they had issue;
3. Joel ROPER (1810 - 1865), born in Chideock, who married Mary Gapper FOWLER (c1817 - 1865); they farmed, sequentially, in Mappercombe, in Delcombe Farm in Milton Abbas and in Winterborne Clenston, all of them in Dorset, where they had issue;
4. Giles Symonds ROPER, M.R.C.S. (1814 - 1883), born in Mappercombe, who married Elizabeth GEAR; Giles was a doctor and surgeon in Beaminster and St. Pancras, London; a widower, he retired in Richmond, Surrey; Giles and Elizabeth had issue;
5. Fanny ROPER (1818 - 1895), born in Mappercombe, who married William WAY; they farmed in Bradpole, where they had issue; a widow, Fanny lived her last years in Bridport; a painted window in Bradpole church commemorates them;
6. Norris ROPER (1820 - 1883), born in Mappercombe, who farmed in Mappercombe and in Littlebredy; he married Sarah Harriet SHEPPARD and they had issue.
Best wishes.
Peter Ferreira.

Hi Nanny Jan,
Thanks for the suggestion. I have been trying to avoid fee researchers. I have been pretty successful to date, based primarily on personal research, using the Dorset OPC and my local Mormon family history centre.
Best wishes.
Peter.

Hi Alli,
Many thanks for those m.i. details. I have never seen that grave, unfortunately. John and Jane Roper were my ancestors. However, I do have those Roper m.i. transcriptions for Chideock, from a wonderful little book published by the Somerset and Dorset Family History Society, back in 1993. It is out of print, but available on film #1559435 from the Mormons' English film library, .
Here are the full details of the m.i. on that Roper grave in Chideock St. Giles cemetery:
No. 108 Table Tomb with Gothic decorative panels.
North Face - Sacred to the memory of / JOHN ROPER / who died at Mappercombe / February the 10th 1837, aged 70 years. / Also of JANE his wife who was buried / on the north side of this tomb / died Jan 28th 1855, aged 72 yrs. East Face - no inscription. South Face - In memory of GILES SYMONDS ROPER / son of JOHN and JANE ROPER of Mappercombe / who departed this life Feb the 8th 1814, aged 5 years. / Also of HENRY their son / who died Sep the 29th 1815 aged 2 months. / Also of GEORGE their son / who died July the 28th 1828, aged 16 years.
*Chideock church registers of burials: *John Roper, Poorstock, Feb. 16th 1837, aged 70. *Jane Roper, Bradpole, Feb. 2nd 1855, aged 72. *Giles Symonds Roper, Poorstock, Feb. 11th 1814, aged 5. *Henry Roper, Poorstock, Oct. 6th 1815, aged 1. *George Roper, Poorstock, Aug 2nd 1828, aged 16.
It is sad how our monument inscriptions are steadily becoming more and more unreadable.
Many thanks, once again, Alli. Best wishes.
Peter.
