Ancestry's 1911 census transcriber at work

George Matthews 1809/10 Skillington
« on: Saturday 10 February 07 10:03 GMT (UK) »

I know George Matthews married Elizabeth Watchorn in 1835, their daughter Betsy married her cousin Josiah  Lyon the son of Harriett Watchorn and Daniel Lyon.  I cannot find a birth for George anywhere or siblings or parents.  I have been in touch with Sally on Genes Reunited as we both share George as our ancestor and she can't find a birth for him either, although she has a death for 1878 for him, so if anyone can help it would be great.

The records for Skillington seem to be on the IGI, but no sign of your george. This is the batch number -  C027822 . There are a number of children born to a Richard Matthews and Mary in the appropriate time period, so either the record has been missed in the transcription, or he wasn't baptised, or perhaps it was a church other than C of E (the latter seems unlikely as many of the children of George & Elizabeth were baptised in this church). There is no extracted marriage entry for Richard & Mary  (although there is a submitted record, giving an exact date) so there may well be some records missing from the IGI for this family.

My suggestion would be - if you do not live near the appropriate records office - order the film from your local LDS centre & check the details of same.

There is a Richard Matthews baptised in Skillington 1775, parents George and Milicent, who may be the father of these children, so it would seem likely that he would call one of his children George.
