Elizabeth nee AYLES (later WOODROW, her father) later CUTLER (step-father) bp in Hurn, Ringwood, on 25th May 1835 married my ggrandfather Edwin LANE on 23rd August 1864 in Ringwood.
Can anyone find here in the 1861 census please? I'd like to know what she was doing, and which surname she was using then!
She was born the illegitimate daughter of Mary AYLES, but two years later Mary married Edward WOODROW. Poor old Edward died two years later, and by 1851 Mary had married Thomas CUTLER. However, on her marriage certificate she gives WOODROW as her surname.
Any information about Elizabeth "I choose my own surname" gratefully received!

Well, that is surprising, John! It's especially interesting to see Elizabeth in London, since her oldest son, Arthur Charles, became a grocer there much later. And her only daughter, Fanny, was a parlour maid to a well-off widow in Wareham, Dorset, 1891, just before she was married.
Does the census just say "servant", with no details of the hierarchy of servants in James WRAY's household?
Curious that she should changeback to WOODROW for her marriage.
Thankyou very much
