Hi DevonJewel
Do you have any other information about the family? When did they arrive in Australia, in which colony were they (NSW, Victoria, etc), occupations, ages, all that sort of thing.
Cheers Prue

Hi The son Henry is on the 1851 with his grandmother in Tavistock Road, St Pauls Covent Garden, He's listed as 7 and born at sea. But I can't find the parents. Would you like the details of the household? Anne

Prue M - thanks for replying Richard went out on the Orleana and also on that ship's list is a Priscilla Moffatt presumably they married over there and then returned 3 years later with Henry - I'm surprised that they didn't call their first son Richard though unless there was a son that died in Oz?
Anne, yes please any information gratefully received.
DJ

Just in case this helps anyone trying to track them in Australia, the ORLEANA arrived in South Australia from England in 1840. If anyone has SA BDMs and could look for a marriage and any children, that would be really helpful.

Thanks Prue, Yes, I'd certainly appreciate finding if they married out there and whether there were other siblings. DJ

Anne, Now I thought Richard & Priscilla had at least six children Henry 1843 to Crissy in 1856. Richard I think is then listed as a publican and in the 1971 census Priscilla is listed as a widow. Could it be Richard's father you have? I've not been able to get any information on his parents. I'm so excited and grateful. DJ

Thanks Jen, Yes that's all I've got. I was hoping for a Marriage Cert whilst they were out there and possibly even a child that died (as I thought they would have kept the name Richard going for first son).
Any news of when or name of ship they returned to England on - presumably they came straight back to England? DJ

Hi DJ
Firstly, welcome to rootschat.
Have you checked the Microfiche for British Births, Deaths & marriages abroad. Is "Moffatt" in Henry names of any significance.
I note there was a Barque called "Moffatt" which arrived in Sydney on 24 December 1842, could they have been on the return journey.
As to the 1851 Census entry for Richard, it's as follows
HO107/1479 Folio 224 pages 39 & 40 St John Evanglist, Westminster - no actual address given against entry Richard Battley Married 36 Burnham Essex Cabinet Maker (Journeyman) Amelia Battley Wife 29 Westminster St John Middlesex Amelia Battley Daughter 4 St Georges Southwark Surrey (note: the name Priscilla had been crossed out and Amelia written above) Priscilla Battley Daughter 1 St Johns Middlesex
Regards
Genni
