Many thanks.
What about Ship records where should I look for them, because if it is my Amelia she must have gone back out around 1860 or early 1861 I presume possibly with other relatives or perhaps as a servant? (I'm just guessing at the moment) but the marriage details do seem to fit.

This was in the BISA:-
BATTLEY  Richard Henry:  born Maldon Essex England  rel:C/E
married:  11.7.1840  Adelaide SA:  Priscilla nee MOFFETT  born England.

Other BATTLEY family's mentioned are:
Elias b: 1817 Norfolk m. Emily Allum & another unknown
resided in the Clarendon, Happy Valley, Kangarilla area.
Elijah:  who is a child of the above and married Hannah Priscilla nee DIX.  Also settled in the Clarendon area.
They all came to SA in 1853 on the MAGDALENA.
There doesn't appear to be a connection between these families and Richard Henry.

Nothing in the bisa for Priscilla MOFFETT or various spellings.

Hope that helps a little,  Sashar

Thanks for that.
Jenn found this for me yesterday - not sure where she found it

AMELIA SARAH BATTLEY aged 27  father Richard Henry Battley
married
EDWARD DUNN aged 27 father John Dunn
27/6/1873
both were single at
St Augustine Church Virginia Ade
BOOK95/PAGE 973

I was trying to trace her arrival in Australia c1840/1 and rest of life there I guess.

Hi DJ

Richard Henry Battley arrived 10th June 1840 on the "Orleana" from London 29.2.1840.

see
http://www.familyhistorysa.info/

Go to South Australian Passenger Lists and put in "Battley"

Richard Henry appears and under that, which I can't quite work out but it mentions Amelia & Priscilla, Moffett, Morgan & Pople.
Someone else might be able to decipher that for you.

I couldn't see Amelia or Edward Dunn in the BISA.

Regards,  Sashar

By what I can see David MORGAN arrived on the Orleana in 1840 along with his wife Christina MOFFATT nee POPLE. David had previously arrived in 1837 aboard The Emma so he had returned to UK and married Christina/Christian Moffatt nee Pople a widow and in 1840 he returned with his family consisting of his new wife and her 3 daughters from a previous marriage Priscilla, Selina and Amelia MOFFATT and 2 children presumably from his marriage to Christina (Looks like David and William MORGAN)

All three girls wed in Adelaide. I see you have Priscilla's. (Fathers are not listed on most early SA marriage Certs - but fortunately for you at least father of the girls appears to be listed at Amelia's second marriage)  Wink

Here are Amelia's two marriages and Selina's Marriage

LITTLETON William Weston 27 Single Father not recorded =  MOFFETT Amelia 24 Single Father not recorded  5 Jul 1854 St Paul Church Port Adelaide Dist Ade
Symbol A 20/204

HAYES William Henry 28 Status unrecorded father Henry Hayes = LITTLETON Amelia 24 Status unrecorded father John Moffitt 25 Aug 1857 St Mark [Penwortham] Dist Cla Symbol A 31/368

WATSON Jas Samuel 40 Status and father unrecorded = MOFFATT Selina 26 Status and father unrecorded 7 May 1850 St James Church [Blakiston] Dist Ade 14/143

Christina MORGAN age 77 Husband David died 29 May 1877 Wallaroo (of Wallaroo) Dist Dal 81 415

The Morgan Boys

MORGAN David 26 Father David Morgan = SMITH Alice Pattin 26 Single father Owen Smith 10 Jun 1865 Res of David Morgan Adelaide Dist Ade 62/240 (2 Births)

MORGAN William Webster 28 Single father David Morgan = BLOOD Mary Anne 20 Single father Michael Blood 17 Dec 1868 Royal Mail Hotel Kingston Dist Rob 77/635 (10 Births)

Selina and James Watson had 8 children...Selina died aged 42 (Husband James Samuel) 25 Aug 1866 Penola (of Penola) Dist Gre 24 589 looks like childbirth related last birth was on the 14th

Don't see any to Amelia (William Littleton died aged 30 (father Francis) 19 Apr 1956 Nth Adelaide dist Ade 3 200- William Henry Hayes died aged 74 24 Oct 1907 Adelaide Dist Ade 328 454 Rel Not Recorded - don't see Amelia to 1915

John MOFFATT = Christian POPLE 13 JUN 1820 Saint Martin In The Fields Westminster London

David MORGAN = Christian MOFFATT 23 MAY 1833 Saint Martin In The Fields Westminster London

So looks like David was already married to Christian when he came the first time in 1837 and then went back for her and the children

Just Google for William Henry Hayes - he's in the online Australian Dictionary of Biography  --  not so cool, oh well, what a fabulous character to have in your history anyway.

Hi DJ

I believe this is Amelia in 1861.

RG9/339 Fol: 142 Page: 27
8 Beresford St, St Mary Newington, Surrey
John HOWELL Head 66 Dublin Ireland Tailor (Master)
Sarah A HOWELL Wife 57 London Middlesex
Amelia Batley Servant 14 London Middlesex

I can only find Priscilla Snr, Priscilla Jnr & Rosina on the 1871 census, not the rest of the family.

Wowee Smiley  you people have really been having a go whilst I slept. Many thanks.

I must admit some of this I've got, but not all the detail - there's a lot more detail and that's GREAT - thanks a lot.

A simple query - how come when I look for Ameilia on the 1861 census in "Findmypast" nothing comes up and yet others find it easily - what are you using?  I've got so much to learn!

Now another question please.  There's two Amelias   - Amelia Moffatt who came out on the Orleana and Amelia Battley b 1846 (father Richard Henry) who was found on the 1861 census in London as a servant but then later - found by Jenn marries out in Adelaide as follows:-
AMELIA SARAH BATTLEY aged 27  father Richard Henry Battley
married
EDWARD DUNN aged 27 father John Dunn
27/6/1873
both were single at
St Augustine Church Virginia Ade
BOOK95/PAGE 973

Can anyone please tell me when/how she got there?
assuming it's the same family but the names and ages all fit.
DJ

PS They've made a film of about Bully Hayes - the good pirate! I'm pleased to have him in my tree (bit of excitement) but pleased he's not a blood relative!
