Thanks Genni,
The 1851 census checks out with my info although the mother is Priscilla and daughters Amelia and Priscilla.
If you look at Jenn (TropicalJ)'s item above you'll see the list of relevant people who went over and Richard then presumably married Priscilla Moffatt whilst in OZ hence using Moffatt as a middle name for their son Henry Frederick Moffatt Battley.
I was hoping to get information off a marriage cert giving details of Richard's parents or siblings back presumably in Burnham on Crouch.

Can you tell me where I can check a microfiche for british BMD abroad please.

Hi DJ

Attached is the passenger List for the "Orleana" jenn found.

http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/1840Orleana.htm

Regarding the Microfiche, you could try your local LDS centre, the State Library is Victoria has a copy.  I can check it next time I go up.

Hi Jenn,
Yes, that's where I got my information and realised that the other passengers fitted in!
But I had hoped to find something on the 1841 census - there must have been someone left behind!
Thanks for trying - my brickwall just got another row added to it, I can't seem to get back any farther.

1841 South Australian census gives very little information.

For Richard Battley it says living at 14 Carrington St, Adelaide. He was under 35. In the same household were 2 females - 1 under 21, and 1 under 14.

That's it.

Hi Sue,
Hmmm interesting I do know there are some other Battleys not so far connected in SA - we've been in touch through Genes but I'll just note that for the moment I think. Thanks anyway.

Hi Jenn,
That marriage looks good with Amelia - presumably she went out there as an adult. I wonder if father (Richard) went back out with her because he disappears from the censuses and then appears to have died.  I must look at this a bit further in the morning.
Thanks for your help, please don't go away.  I will be back as they say.

Hi everyone,
I've checked through all the death certificates for an Amelia Bat(t)ley between 1851 and 1861 and only found an Amelia Martha 4Q 1860 in West Ham (?) don't think they give ages at that time.
I can't find Amelia aged 14 on the 1861 census, but the rest of the family is there.  But the marriage mentioned by Jenn in Australia to Edward Dunn sounds good she's the right age and Father's name Richard Henry is right too, so is there any way of pursuing this please?  Finding out when she went back out there?
Or censuses for Australia about 1861 or 1871? links or help much appreciated I'm a bit out of my depth here only really used "Findmypast" searches before.
