Hi Bill,

Welcome to RootsChat. I can see no births to Edward and Amelia in SA. I tried deaths to 1915 and no Amelia. I see 2 Edwards of around the right age (55 in 1898 and 68 in 1911) died in SA but where such a common name is concerned and with no relative recorded for either of these I really can't say. Sorry..... Kris  Cry

Smiley  That's looking brilliant cando for Amelia
and others for the help on Edward!
The other thought we had is that Amelia's Sister Priscilla may also have gone out and married someone by the unusual name of Stritzko (her eldest son was called Walter Joseph but born in England in 1875).  So we think Priscilla (b1850) may have been out in Australia between 1865-1875 when she married Stritzko - hope this will be an easy one!
Thanks so much for your help we do really appreciate it.

Thanks a lot for looking Kris.
We've not found a Marriage Cert in UK either.  Perhaps he was Austrian or German?  Is there a separate place on this website for European info?
Thanks again.

Hi Kris Thanks for the welcome. I am still not too sure if I am using this site in the right way yet.
I dont know if Dunn is a common name. But someone found this
Reg No. 482/1873   AMELIA DUNN maried  EDWARD JOSEPH  MURPHY  SYDNEY

Which would mean Amelia remarrying at the age of 37.
What do you think? Could it be her? Cheers Bill

Hi Jenn, I do think Cando's info is good and I don't think that
Amelia remarried. I have been trying to find a ship for her and Richard. No luck yet     Thanks Bill

Hi Jenn,
UK based - Devon - so its rather expensive for just the possibility of turning up one relative!  I've still got lots of certificates to send for and lots more branches to explore.

We've still not managed to get back before 1814 when our Richard Bat(t)ley was christened in Burnham, Essex to parents Richard and Sarah. Father given as a Serving man.  As son Richard sometimes gives his place of birth as Maldon, Essex (port) we wondered whether his father was a sailor?  Which I suppose might explain why son Richard was brave enough to go to Australia in 1840? All guesses still though.

Well I never did think I'd crack it all in a few weeks!

Hi DJ,

Not sure if this has been suggested before (and too lazy to go back through the thread and check!  Embarrassed Grin  ); perhaps a post on the Essex board asking for Burnham parish record lookups might be a good next move?  Someone who's able to view any films or the original records could check back from Richard's birth for a marriage for his parents.

Hi DJ & Bill

I've been to the State Library of Vic today, found the following.

Assisted passengers to SA.

Amelia Battley - Servant from Middlesex aged 18.  Arrived on "Ocean Chief" from Plymouth on 7th April 1864.

Cheers
