According to the IGI Richard BUIST, son of Wiliam and Euphemia nee DRUMMOND, born 12 Jan 1831, Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian

There are a lot of children to this couple here, and the entries are all extracted from the Parish Register for the Edinburgh Parish.

William born 11 Sept 1838
Joseph born 25 Mar 1841
James born 25 May 1829
Janet born 6 Mar 1836
Margaret born 26 Jan 1834

Because these are extracted records, they are pretty reliable, unlike those sent in by others.

A marriage for William BUIST and Euphemia DRUMMOND 30 June 1828 St Cuthberts Edinburgh Midlothian

Hope that this helps a bit. Tried for Euphemia's birth, but nothing showed up, probably because they did not bother to register her as you found on scotlandspeople.

Thanks for this - and sorry for the late reply. Life got busy!

I had these children along with some others, and approximate years of birth, but it is much nicer to have the actual dates.

I still need to find out about the IGI (I don't know what it is!) - I will do a search on it soon.

Is there any chance that the 'Hosker' for William on the 1851 census is 'Hostler'?

Do you think I should ask for a general search for them in England in 1861, to try to firm up William's place of birth, given that they don't seem to be in Scotland then? Or should I ask someone to do an 1871 census search (William dies in Oct 1871)?

I had a bit of a look on the English 1861 Census and did not find anything that I though a good enough match. Probably worth having someone look in Scotland on the 1871 for you just to check.
