McKenzie NSW
« on: Sunday 11 February 07 14:39 GMT (UK) »

I have John McKenzie, b1866 in Glasgow, the youngest son of Alexander and Ann (White), apparently emigrated and settled in NSW. He married and had at least one daughter who became a teacher (?). John and his daughter later upped sticks and went to New Zealand where he died.

This is all I know and obviously it is not enough to search with but maybe somebody out there recognises some of this story and could fill me in. Fingers crossed!

The website www.ancestorsonboard.com (which is a pay per view site) lists the following emigrants to Sydney:

John McKenzie  aged 24   1890    London/Sydney
John M. McKenzie  aged 29  1894      "           "
John McKenzie  aged 28  1895           "           "
John W. McKenzie aged 23  1899       "           "

Might the 4th one's middle name be White, after his mother ?
His age and year of departure would fit his year of birth.

Wow! Thank you, that was quick! I don't have a middle name recorded for him but lets not rule it out.

Apologies; arithmetic was never my strong point   Embarrassed Embarrassed
It's the 1st John McKenzie who might fit, being born in 1866.

I haven't got any further with this as yet. If I searched marriages in Oz would the record show the grooms parents names?

Could somebody with a find my past/ancestors on board subscription get any more details about the John and wife on the energia in 1886?

As far as I know (without a subscription) the emigration records on fmp start at 1890.

From Jenn's link the wife with John in 1886 is Mary aged 30
http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/searchform.aspx?id=6

There is no further information online at ancestry. except the arrival date of June 4. This is unusual for assisted migrants - this John, however would seem to be 10 years older than your John.

John arriving 1882 is slightly closer to the mark, his wife is given as Elizabeth aged 21, and despite 4 duplicate entries on ancestry, there is no further information.

You can buy transcripts of the fiche information from the archives or from NSW transcription agents.

Have you found John in the census in Scotland - this would enable you to get the immigration year slightly more accurate.
What was the name of his daughter? It may be possible to find her birth - especially if you have an age at death from NZ.

Marriage indexes in Australia (and I would think most other places) don't show parent names. You have to (sadly) buy the certificate/transcript to see the parent names.

Hi Trish, You are right - Maths let me down again! My mum doesn't know his daughters name, only that she might have been a teacher. The last census I found him on was 1881 when he had moved from Scotland to Manchester. There is a possible in Liverpool in 1901 but he is a boarder so hard to know if its the right one!

If there is no detailed info on passenger lists is there any other way I could narrow this down? Any Aus records that would be worth looking at? Can anyone find a possible marriage of John to Elizabeth, possibly in Manchester, in 1881/82?

From my earlier post
This is the cheapest way I know of at the moment to get more information
You can buy transcripts of the fiche information from the archives or from NSW transcription agents.

If you follow the link I gave, you can see where to purchase from State records (NSW archives). These are the transcription agents - I know Laurie Turtle goes to the archives - I don't know about the others
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/howToSearch.htm#TranscriptionAgent

There may not be more information, I am not exactly sure which files Ancestry have transcribed, as I mentioned some of the other records for assisted immigrants on ancestry have more information than the one for John.

Trish

Have you checked freeBDM for your marriage - should be complete at this time
