1851 - Brampton look up please
« on: Monday 22 November 04 20:54 GMT (UK) »

Hi, is it possible for someone to look up a family on the 1851 census for Brampton please?

I'm looking for John & Elizabeth Farish/Fairish.
Children - Joshua abt 7, also possibly Fleming, Joseph, Thomas, Jacob, Abraham & James.

John was a coal miner I believe.

Thank you very much

Hi AndyH,

I'm sorry I don't have any address not even a hint of one! I've only been able to find some of the sons in 1871...and they'd all moved to County Durham!

John Farish I believe died before 1869 (according to a marriage cert of a son).

I haven't yet found a birth certificate for any of the boys either only baptisms, so no clues there either.

If I find more info I'll post it!!!

Thankyou

AndyH that's really kind of you but please don't feel you have to. I can only imagine how much of a nightmare looking through all of them will be  Undecided

Tabitha,

Slight hitch.  There are two Brampton's, one in Cumberland (near Carlisle), the other in Westmorland (near Appleby). Are you able to say which one needs researched?

Tabitha

Apologies for delay in replying. Have photocopied entry from 1851 Brampton census, listing John & Elizabeth Farish, together with  John, Isac (Isaac?), William, Fleming, Joseph, Thomas, Joshua and Jacob  at Bowbank, Farlam, Brampton. Rather than attempt to transcribe it, if you could post an address, I can scan (jpeg) and email it to you

Best regards

Hiya,

I have Farishes in my tree from Annan.  There are a number of large Farish families mainly in the weaving or joinery businesses.

What info do you have?  Do any of the children's or wife's births suggest they are from Scotland?

If you'd like me to check any Annan records I've transcribed the OPRs for Farish and I also have indexes for 1841 Dumfries & Annan and surrounding villages (If John was alive then).

Hi Pam,

Um....don't know!! The info from the 1851 census was from Farlam, Cumberland.

John Farish is the head of the family aged 50, an agric. labourer. His birthplace is given as Scotland.

His wife Elizabeth was born in Wigton, Cumberland abt 1805. The oldest child on the 1851 is John aged 18 (coal miner) born in Cumrew, Cumberland. All of the other children are also born in Cumberland.

So......I haven't got a clue where to start looking!!! The only other info I have is from his son Joshua's marriage certificate in 1869. John's occupation was stated as Coal miner but that he was deceased by 1869!

Just out of interest the other children (that I'm aware of!) where called: Jane, William, Fleming, Joseph, Thomas, Joshua, Jacob, Abraham & James!

Any suggestions of where to start would be greatly appreciated  Grin

Thanks for your interest Pam.

If you PM me your email I'll send you the Annan OPR file I've created (excel so can't attach).  It's good just to have as Annan male births aren't on the IGI and there are a fair few Farishs.

Otherwise there is always http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk but you could end up spending a lot of cash just looking for one chap!

Hello Tabitha,

I believe that John Farish who married Elizabeth Hall was a husbandman for most of his life. Their son Joshua was married twice and with his second wife Catherine Pratt he had a son called Fleming which was a family name as Elizabeth's mother madien name was Ann Fleming. I too have been researching the Farish family tree as I'm Fleming Farish's grandson !

I haven't manged to trace John Farish back to Scotland but I have been to the records office in Carlise to research his wife's family.

Stephen.
