Brickmaker's premises, 1830 Sydney COMPLETED WITH MANY THANKS
« on: Monday 12 February 07 11:06 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone recommend a good map of the Surry Hills area about 1830?  My g-g-g-grandmother's brother drowned in a pond there at the age of 6  Cry  (he was playing at catching frogs and fell in, poor little fellow).

Little Isaiah lived on East Market Street.  The place where he died is described in the inquest report as "the premises of Mr. R. Hosketh, the brickmaker, near the Surry Hills".   I am aware of the road called Brickfield Hill (now Lee Street I think, where it passes near Central Station) but I'm not sure that the brickmaking area was actually there - it's not really Surry Hills anyway (but maybe it was known as that then).

Thanks for any recommendations!

Have a look at www.caseyandlowe.com.au/pdf/leaflet1.pdf
This website refers to archaeological work at the site of 183o's brickfields at 19-41 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills. They mention a creek there   -  maybe the "pond" you referred to.

By the way, Prue, Brickfield Hill was that part of George Street where Anthony Hordens Store once stood, and where World Square now stands.  This was a brickmaking area in the early days.

You could contact Lisa Murray at Sydney Town Hall. She is the historian and could certainly help you.
