Shaw/Doulay Family
« on: Wednesday 14 February 07 14:26 UTC (UK) »

Looking for any ionformation about my gt gt gt Grandparents James Shaw and Catherine Doulay from Sligo.

They had a daughter named Catherine (also born in Sligo abt 1845)who married George Sloan (born in Armagh abt 1845).  Catherine snr is shown on the 1871 census as living with her daughter and son in law in Dundee aged 75.  James Shaw was already dead by the time of his daughters marriage in 1867.

Sorry information is so sparse but any help would be greatly appreciated as this dead end has had me stuck for well over a year now.

Hello Thisty,

There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Some of the information on the family may be in Scotland instead of Ireland.

Did Catherine, and James, die in Scotland? If so there might be more information on their death certificates. See Scotland People website for what information is on Scottish certificates and how to order them.

Thanks christopher and aghadowey.

Unfotunately I am still no further forward with this particular line Sad.  I assume Catherine snr died in Scotland but I cannot for the life of me find her death, James I know nothing about whatsoever ... even the fact he was from Sligo is an educated guess based on his daughter's birthplace.  No idea as to his religion (although I would guess Protestant) or which particular town they came from.

Guess these people just don't want to be found lol

As Christopher mentioned, you need to know the family's religion to search for church records in Ireland- Protestant covers many different religions and is no help in finding church records- you need to know whether they were Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, etc.
You also need to know where they lived (parish if not townland (not town) not just the county).

two silly questions ....

Is there an "easy" way of finding out which part of sligo they may have been from? (sorry I am a bit clueless as soon as my lines leave Scotland lol)

Catherine jnr was married in the Scottish Episcopal Church (should have looked at that marriage certificate before posting last time lol)  so does that give any clues as to which church the family may have belonged to in Ireland?

Scottish Episcopal church- would check Church of Ireland.
Best place to find where they came from in Ireland/Sligo might be on Scottish certificates.
