Abernethy from Portsoy to British Columbia
« on: Wednesday 14 February 07 15:06 GMT (UK) »

Trying to find descendants of Elsy Jane Abernethy b. Portsoy, Banffshire believed to have emigrated to Canada (settling in British Columbia) in the late 1880s or early 1980s. Anyone have any info?

Hi,

Do you mean 1880s & 1890s?

If so, have you checked the 1901 and 1911 census transcripts at:

http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/index.html

Thank you, Josephine. Guess my fingers got muddled!! Yes, of course that should have been 'late 1880s to early 1890s'. That should teach me to read my messages before hitting the 'send' key. Thx again, and I will try that site.

You're welcome, paddwadd.   Wink

I hope you find them in 1901 or 1911.  Keep in mind that the transcription is still in progress and is being done by dedicated volunteers (thank you, Automated Genealogy folks!).

Do you have any data on them from the British census?  Was Abernethy her married name?

Josephine

Josephine: No it was her maiden name. I understand she married someone in BC of German descent and with the anti-German sentiment during WWI the family changed the German name back to her maiden name of Abernethy.

J.J. Thank you for that update on the family. Her brother James Russell was my grandfather, yes, grandfather!

Wow...Mothers married late or birthing late in life? Sounds like my family... !  Welcome to Rootschat by the way...can't see a marriage or a death for an ELSY was hoping she'd used that forename as it would have made it easier, actually.

Yes, James R was in his  30s when my father was born and my father was in his mid 40s when I was born!

Could she perhaps have used Jane rather than Elsie?

paddwadd,

If she was born in 1844 and went to Canada in the late 1880s, she would have been in her forties.  That's late in life to marry and then start having children.

It would be hard slogging looking for her in the unindexed Canadian passenger lists:
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/passenger/index-e.html

Here she is in the British Columbia Cemetery Finding Aid:

ABERNETHY, Elsie Jane
Mountain View Cemetery
Fraser Street, Vancouver,
Reference #BCGS-C-62

It looks like she's listed as Jane in 1911 in Vancouver City:

Samuel Abernethy, Married, Head born 1881, age 30
Violet Abernethy, Wife, born Aug 1886, age 24
Ethel Abernethy, Daughter, born Oct 1908, age 2
Jane Abernethy, Mother-in-law, Widowed, born Dec 1841, age 70

It's odd that she has the same surname as her son-in-law.  Could he be her stepson?

The B.C. Archives website has a marriage:

Samuel Abernethy +
Violet Ethel Henderson
in Port Moody, B.C.
1 January 1908

There's a death for Samuel Abernethy 17 July 1942 in Vancouver.

His death & marriage records should list his parents' names.

At www.ancestorsonboard.com there is an "Abernethy", Female, age 49, who sailed from Glasgow to Montreal in 1890.

It's pay per view at www.ancestorsonboard, but you can go to
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/passenger/001045-100.01-e.php?PHPSESSID=df0803265fbfb99e48617b14c09cd8ca

put in Glasgow as Departure and Montreal as arrived, year 1890.  There seems to be only 7 ships, so not to much searching.

Josephine:
I cannot believe how much work you have done and how much you have found out. I agree with you that somehow being in her 40s when she came to Canada seems rather old, especially at that time. Now, you have started me thinking. If she married late in life it may have been to a widower who had children and it was they, along with their father, who took the name Abernethy. The variance in the age of Elsie (Elsy) was, I believe, quite common in those days as people often gave an approximate age.

paddwadd,

It was J.J. who reminded me of the BC Archives website; I'd forgotten all about it.   Cheesy

I just wonder why we can't find Elsy Jane's marriage there.

Karen's suggestion is excellent.  It will take a while but it might be worth it to scroll through the images of those seven ships.
