Can you help me solve this mystery?
« on: Thursday 15 February 07 22:52 GMT (UK) »

I have a rather confusing problem and hope someone could look in Hereford parish records to help me solve it.

I have ancestors Nathaniel Turner and Ann Turner (nee Wilcox) who married in 1755 in Kings Caple.

I have a letter written by Walter Nathaniel Turner in 1860 that states Nathaniel (his grandfather) married Ann daughter of Thomas Wilcox. She died at the age of 34 years leaving six children, namely Ann, Elizabeth, Martha, Nathaniel, Sarah and Robert.

I have a second letter written in 1947 by the Grandaughter of Walter regarding the story of a family scandal told to her by her grandmother, Walters wife.  This states that Anne married Nathaniel Turner and had 5 children, then she met up with the duke of norfolk, whom she had know before her marriage and shortly after had a 6th child Robert.  She died in child birth leaving a letter to her husband saying this 6th child was not his but the duke of norfolks.

Now this is a fantastic story..that i would love to be true..however i have a problem.

I have looked up the children's baptisms on IGI and found them all to be baptized in Kings Caple, however the dates do not tie in with the story

Ann 1756, Martha 1757, Elizabeth 1760, Nathaniel 1762, Roberson 1764 (this is the year the letter also says he was born) and the Sarah 1767

Now if Ann died in child birth there is no way she could have had Sarah 3 years later !!!!

I am hoping that someone out there may be able to look in Hereford parish records to check for me that Robert(Robertson) & Sarah's dates are correct on IGI, because at the mo, i am very confused and going round in circles.

thanks all

Hi Fudge,
I've had a look for you and as you probably already know...Nathaniel Turner and Ann (Willcox) were married on 5th June 1755 at Kings Caple. It was by Banns and the witnesses were Thomas Morgan and Thomas Willcox.
These are from the Parish Records...
Robert, son of Nathaniel and Ann was baptised at Kings Caple on February 2nd 1765.
Sarah, daughter of Nathaniel and Ann was baptised at Kings Caple on March 6th 1767.
There is an entry for Ann's burial  too....Anne Turner (nee Willcox)buried November 15th 1767 aged 33 at Kings Caple.
Hope that helps...Julie
