1846 Newbury Epidemic?
« on: Friday 16 February 07 13:31 UTC (UK) »

I have been researching the name of Watts in Newbury & wondered if anyone could answer a question for me?  Several of my ancestors died in 1846, could anyone tell me if there was a Epidemic which hit this Newbury area of Berkshire in 1846.  I have Five ancestors, one being mother & son who died in this year.

Several of my relatives died of typhoid in the autumn of 1846 (in London, rather than Newbury) - apparently it was caused by a long hot summer causing hygiene problems.

The death certificates should tell you what they died of.

There may well have been a small epidemic in Newbury in 1846, burials did peak that year. The graph shows the number of burials for each year from 1820-50. 1846 is by no means the worst year.

As Pauline says - the death certificates will tell the story. You could also check the local newspaper (Reading Mercury) to see if there are any reports.
