Hi, does anyone know of any free websites to access census records in England and Ireland? Cheers.

Here's something interesting I found on how to work out how old your old maps are. These are date codes for Geographers and Geographia sheet maps (not A to Zs), source of this info is:   http://www.waml.org/datecode.html#geograp

"Geographers A-Z Map Company
In or near the border at one corner of each map is a coded reference to the date of revision. Substitute numbers for the following letters to get the month and year:
A - 0
B - 9
C - 8
D - 7
E - 6
F - 5
G - 4
H - 3
I - 2
J - 1
Example:
S78 = May 1978
Source: Biblio (University of Illinois Map and Geography Library), 1987-1.

Geographia
At the bottom left corner of each map (usually) are some letters. If you substitute numbers for letters in the world CUMBERLAND to get month and year the map was published.
C - 1 U - 2
M - 3
B - 4
E - 5
R - 6
L - 7
A - 8
N - 9
D - 0
Example:
L.BR = 7th month of [19]46
Source: ACMLA Bulletin 40, p. 57."

I have one coded RRC (6/61 or June 1961) and another CCMN (11/39 or June 1939).

Hows about that then!   Grin Grin

re dates on maps :- thank you Barbara.
I have collected some old maps. I have always wondered why there is often no date on them!
This might help me date some of them now.
Is there any way of dating old 'A to Z's?

Hi Kooky
I've had a look round and as far as the 'Geographers' A-Zs go (the original brand name I think), you have to go by the publishing address  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographer's_A%E2%80%93Z_Street_Atlas

and of course how much it cost.  If its in 'old money' its going to be before, what, 1972?

If that's all too serious, have a look at the biography of Phyllis Pearsall, the original A-Z designer  Cheesy Cheesy What a lady! http://www.designmuseum.org/design/phyllis-pearsall

Hello Dee,

Sorry for late reply, I was away when you posted this  Kiss

Here is a section from 1937 map, Heron St is un-named but I have marked it in blue. On today's map it would be near Royce Rd and City Rd in Hulme.
The 'recreation ground' marked on this map is on the site of the old Hulme Cavalry Barracks that was there in the 1850s.

Hope this helps
