There are over 60 photos of Barkerville, so if you want to order any reproductions, you can...Yes, the one of John is in itself, family history gold...

One of the town's pioneers and gold miners was an amateur photographer...so he may well have been the onewho took all the "undetermined photos" of the era...how lucky was that? J.J.

I'm not sure if I pointed you in the right direction for textual files... Roll Eyes
Those records are here:
http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-A0B786/textual/general/textual.htm

This mining lease from the Cariboo government agency records for 1897 says:
Call Number: GR-0216  BOX# 129 File# 3  Contents: Pomeroy, John et al Oct. 19 1897
which means he and others leased

Ashcroft Supreme Court probate/estate files 1907-1990
His estate files  GR-3245 reel B09551 /  Pomeroy, John /  folio year: 4/1914

also found: Call Number: GR-3245 duty #420 file#55 /  Supreme Court / Pomeroy, J.  1914

There is another file for a Pomeroy J....but there was also a James...so you'll have to see as it is in later years....

oooohhhh...who did he leave it all to?  Grin  J.J.

is on a small server and got overloaded...
The interest from rootschat can probably overload a site...Your query is only a day old and has 75 views already!

WOW,
WOW
, WOW !!!!

This is what RootsChat is for !

I'm so excited, particularly at the photo of him !     WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is so much to read through, I'm jumping up and down on my chair at the lap-top, such that I can't concentrate !

And would you believe it ... I think I said I went to Barkerville about 5 years ago, BEFORE I had researched or even knew about that side of my fathers family.  And last night I searched my book shelves, and found the book I had bought there on the history of Barkerville, called 'Barkerville: A Gold Rush Experience' by Richard Thomas Wright, pub. Winter Quarters Press of Williams Lake ... and would you believe it, there's a little bit about John in it !   Sitting on the shelf in my bedroom all this time !   It says he died in the Royal Kariboo Hospital; that he had had a ranch near Williams Lake, and had originally mined in the USA before going to BC for the Antler Creek strike, and had settled at Williams Creek (Barkerville).

Why don't we do this research BEFORE the oldies die ... there's no-one to get excited with, except RC people of course !

I'm on the verge of booking another air ticket to Canada !!!   (Perhaps !)

JJ ... I checked that out and he appears as John Pomeroy alongside a John Polmere, so two different men.  See pages 3 and 16 ...

This topic is widening !

I've found another relative:-

Quote
Stubbs, William, Shawnigan, Labourer, Cow

on the 1898 voters list you gave me J.J. ... can you or anyone translate it please ?  What has a cow to do with voters ?!  And is Shawnigan a place, and where ?

But lets keep the topic on Barkerville miners, once past this sideways step !

oonagh, I agree. He does look lovely.  Smiley  A  Victorian gent with a taste for adventure.

I bet if he had been a bit younger he may have headed for the Yukon. The Klondike gold rush .
http://www.nps.gov/archive/klgo/history.htm

Anyone interested( and who could not be?  Grin )  can put 'Yukon, gold rush, pass'  or similar words in 'Google ' and choose 'images'.  Click on them to enlarge.

The sight of that line of men going single-file over the Chilkoot Pass  is amazing.

They had to carry their own supplies  with them, and had to climb,  as the pictures show, over the pass carrying their stuff on their backs, then return to make the same trip  many times to get all their supplies.

There were certain items that had to have. Everyone had to be  independant.
But you can read all about it. It is fascinating. Some people like to follow the route the gold rush prospectors followed. Smiley

Lydart, If you do come to B.C . again I am sure you will enjoy Barkerville, and the Cariboo  area so much more knowing about the family connection.  Smiley

There is a place calleded 'Shawnigan Lake' on Vancouver Island.

What a miner had to carry in order to be able to survive was staggering ... have a look at this list:

NAME / RESIDENCE / PROFESSION, TRADE, or CALLING / DISTRICT

COW being the district and Shawnigan residence
Likely short for Cowichan
