Where do I look next?
« on: Sunday 18 February 07 02:06 GMT (UK) »

Could someone advise me as to where I might look for my family.

They appeared on the 1841 census living at Dorset St. Marylebone - thanks to Rambler, but I cannot find them on Freecen in 1851.

They sailed from Northhampton in Dec. 1854 to Aust.

They must have been hiding somewhere.  Just cannot find them.

They are:   Thomas Southan   Farrier  - 30 in 1841
                  Louisa wife
                  Martha  daughter
By 1851 there would be an Annie and a Harriet as well.

Please a suggestion where I look next.

Thankyou for any help.  Annette

Northampton is further from the sea than almost any other town in England.  Do you mean Southampton?

I focussed on searching the 1851 - nationwide - the name is uncommon, only about 117 in the country with the exact spelling - but no family group seemed to fit  Huh

Thankyou to you both .
Firstly I am embarrassed to have made the mistake regarding the sailing point.    I had quickly written at the top of the copy of the shipping list of passengers the departure and arrival dates.   Obviously confusing the places.

Secondly, I should have stated that the 1841 Census bore the name spelt SOUTHON but the christian  names are correct.

They were hiding somewhere in 1851 - I just have to find them.

By the time they had reached Australia they were Southans.

Thankyou  for your time,  Annette

Sadly, slight spelling changes - esp at the end of the name - dont matter - my searches were using a wildcard - thus - SOU*, and then just forenames and date ranges ....

They are most probably around, but in what 'guise' I know not - if Horace Gratton can become ~~~~ Watten !!! as an example earlier showed !

Newfy,

I am presuming that Mary may be Thomas' sister and the 10 yr old Thomas is her son.

They did not make the trip over here and I have not been able to find her.

Thomas was born in Middlesex but returned to England after his wife died in Aust. and he died in Manchester in 1879.    I have yet to prove all this.

Thanks, Newfy

I did search for quite some time as well, having had a similar problem looking for an emigrant family. I had a Daniel Farmilo who the enumerator or transcriber turned into David Sannell  & he was only found via the birthplace of a child born close to 1850 and alot of looking by ArranRoots  Cheesy

Thus I did look for Annie & Harriet and found 2 Harriet possibilities in Middlesex 1844 and 1846. (but I still couldn't find the family  Sad ) As asked by Welsh lady, the dates & location of the births of these other children could well help find the family in 1851.

Hello to you all,

I have just lost somehow,  the last posting I made. Cannot believe it. So her I go again!

The children on the shipping list of The Persia were Annie, 12,  Harriet  7 and William 5.  The eldest daughter, Martha was in a separate cabin but all the family were born in Middlesex.   Just how accurate this is one would not know.

I am not even sure how Thomas Morgan Southan is related but my grandfather was  Horace Morgan,   his father was William Morgan  and Thomas' daughter, Martha called her son Morgan.
There just has to be a tie there.

I am afraid that I am off to bed now as it is 11.30pm.  I will tackle the Southans in the morn.

Thankyou all,  Annette
