this looks like the same family in 1861
Beach, St Ives RG9/1590 folio 13 pg 24 William H Grenfell head mar 22 copper miner b. St Ives Elizabeth wife 22 b. Paul William son 2 b. St Ives James C son b. St Ives
possible marriage reg William Henry Grenfell sept qtr 1858 Penzance vol 5c pg 446 with Elizabeth Jane Carter on the same page
think you'll need the marriage cert as there's more than one William Henry Grenfell around the area. By the way, there are 2 parishes with St Just in their name - the one near St Ives is St Just in Penwith.
This site may help you with parish records http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/ and you can access the Cornwall census via FreeCen http://www.freecen.org.uk/

William died ..larkhall...1914 ...parents are listed as William grenfell Elija Rowe i had his parents as john grenfell and Elizabeth ?as the 1851 census showed must have got wrong one...but he was listed as an apprentice cordwainer(shoemaker)....1901 Scottish census larkhall...shoemaker.any ideas as to parents . Also Elizabeth Jane carter death ...1893...larkhall....shows her parents as James carter and Elizabeth Jane Ellis toukin not heard of that surname or the spelling as cert is hard to read any ideas ?
thanks again for the info ,and quick reply

suspect the name is Tonkin. On the opc search site, there's a James Carter who witnessed a marriage of a Jane Tonkin Ellis in Paul in 1839. The father on this record is given as George Ellis and George Ellis married Mary Tonkin 26/5/1799 in Madron by Penzance. IGI extracted baptisms for Paul C053401, parents George Ellis & Mary Mary bp 3/8/1800 George bp 10/10/1802 William bp 21/10/1804 Jane Tonkin 7/9/1808 Charles 8/5/1808
There's an extracted baptism in IGI batch C023411 Paul for Elizabeth Jane Carter 4/9/1836 dau of James & Mary Carter. I'm hoping that the mother's first name on the death cert is wrong and whoever registered the death thought she had been named after her mother.
Can't spot the Carter marriage as yet but I'll post this and go check my indexes. I've spotted a possible William/Eliza couple in 1841, but need to look for their marriage as well.

not having any joy with the marriages in Cornwall, but this could be the family in 1851
Fore St, St Ives HO107/1917 folio 513 pg 28 William Grenfell head mar 39 miner b. Madron Eliza wife 40 b. Paul Richard son 14 b. St Ives Wm Hy son 12 b. St Ives Peter R son 2 b. St Ives Jane Ellis lodger 23 servant b. St Ives
best match I can see for Peter's birth reg has been transcribed on FreeBmd as Peter Roro Greenfield dec qtr 1848 Penznace vol 9 pg 188 I'm pretty sure the middle name is Row on the original index, but the surname does appear to be Greenfield.
Carter family in 1841? Boase St, Paul HO107/143/9 folio 32 pg 8 James Carter 40 grocer's shop Mary 15 Ann 10 William 5 Elizabeth 5 James 2 all born in county except Mary, so perhaps marriage was also out of county
There is an extracted IGI marriage batch M055631 ST Mary Newington, Surrey James Carter md Mary Ellis 12/12/1821 but they're not uncommon names so it may just be a coincidence.

just checked the baptisms for the rest of the Carter family - IGI batch C023411 and William was baptised William Charles Ellis Carter 23/4/1834. William's age is slightly out on the 1841 census, but it's possible that James' wife had just died. There's a burial of a Mary Carter aged 41 1/6/1841 in Paul, less than a week before the census.
Where did you get the St Just bit from?

still don't understand the St Just link. Both boys on the 1861 census have their place of birth as St Ives and Eliza (not Elija, a male name) gives St Hilary rather than Paul as in 1851, family still in St Ives as in 1851

Have a look at the Cornwall resources - there's plenty of stuff online for Cornwall. The record office in Truro are also very helpful.
