Problem with Thumbnails

When I setup my Rootschat web space I incorporated a page of thumbnails using Irfanview - no problems. This was a couple of years ago.
I am now trying to incorporate a second thumbnail page, again using Irfanview. The new thumbnails do not display - empty boxes but the main images open okay. If I right click on one of the thumbnails and select '.' then the thumbnail opens on a new page.

To add to the confusion, if I modify my original thumbnail.html page so that one of the thumbnails points to one of the NEW images then it displays okay.

Everything works okay on my pc.

Any thoughts as to what else I should check?

Sorry, there is an error in my original post. If I right-click one of the thumbnails and select 'view image' the thumbnail opens ok in a new page.

Had my fingers crossed that you would pick this one up......

Rootschat address is http://cremonini.rootschat.net

From the index page Certificates is the link to the new thumbnails. Family Photos gives a link to page with the original thumbnails

The original thumbnail.html still has the mod to display one of the thumbnails that the new certificates.html will not display.

Hope that is cleared than it reads.

Hi mcrem

You seem to have problems on 2 pages:

1) Cremonini Family Photos  - the thumbnail image for Brixham9 is a marriage certificate, but it does render the correct photo when clicked.
2) Certificates - 1, 2 and 4 display red crosses instead of thumbnail images.

In answer to point number one you need to change your html code from:
You might have deliberately altered this code for experimental reasons.
<IMG SRC="3-cert_t.jpg"
to
<IMG SRC="Brixham9_t.jpg"

Additionally, on this page you have 2 rootschat footers, so you may want to edit and remove one of the footers.  Right click thumbnails.htm and open with NotePad.  Go down to the line beginning:

<!-- RootsChat.com footer -->

and highlight all the text until you see the line <!-- RootsChat.com footer --> again and press delete and save the file.  Then upload it to rootschat.  If you find that rootschat has added anothe logo at the bottom then you may need to re-edit the file and remove both footers.  Make sure that the tags </body></html> are at the bottom of the file though.  Then re-upload it.

In answer to point number two:
Are all you files in one folder or do you have the .jpg's stored in a sub folder?  You may need to see where they are stored using your ftp program.  The fact that you have red crosses suggests that  the line of code <IMG SRC="1-cert_t.jpg" does not point to where the image is actually stored.  However, it can find <IMG SRC="3-cert_t.jpg" the third image which must be in the correct location.  Having said that, I think even image 3 is in the wrong location.  The only reason it is being displayed is because it is being held in cache from visiting the thumbnails.htm page.
So you need to move images 1, 2 (and probably 3) and 4 to the correct folder/location.

Thanks for your response.

I did mention in my post that I had modified my original thumbnails.html to point to one of the images that would not display (just to prove that the image was there). So point number one is deliberate.

All images are in the same directory. So the problem is that my thumbnails.html correctly finds the thumbnail but my Certificates.html seems not to.

I would appreciate any further thoughts you may have.

I missed the obvious as usual  Smiley

Your actual images are called:  1-cert.jpg, 2-cert.jpg, 3-cert.jpg and 4-cert.jpg

BUT

your script is calling: 1-cert_t.jpg, 2-cert_t.jpg, 3-cert_t.jpg and 4-cert_t.jpg

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE.

You have to do something about that _t - so either rename the .jpg files or alter the html code in certificates.htm.

Not sure that you are correct downside.

1-cert_t.jpg is the thumbnail, 1-cert.jpg is the normal size image.

The script in thumbnail.html (which works) is the same as that in Certificates.html (which doesn't)

Hi Mcrem

This may be one for Trystan to have a look at.

I had a similar problem but with the images I used for my buttons on my webpages.

Trystan finally looked at what was happening and decided that the server was giving up half way through sending all the files out. So I would get the html file but not the jpg's.

He did come up with a fix which has worked very well for me, but I'll leave it to him to tell you what it is, if your problem is the same as mine.

Really appreciate your input - in truth I was hoping that someone would suggest that it might be a server problem. Had a similar problem with Freeserve a few years back - made changes to my site but then couldn't see them. Turned out it was something to do with caching on their server.

I will approach Trystan.

I haven't  fixed it and have just checked and the problem is still there.

Just to clarify - if you click on "Certificates" from the index page the boxes do not display the thumbnails but clicking on one of the boxes brings up the main image.

Can you confirm that is what you see.

No, there are 4 thumbnail images in a horizontal line and clicking on each one brings up the full image page.

Can't get my head around this one....

What you see is exactly as it should be but not what I get.

I have set my browser to clear cache each time I exit. I get the same result with Firefox and IE.

I will try and find out how many others can see the images.
