Ibbotsons in Grimsby
« on: Wednesday 21 February 07 17:24 GMT (UK) »

I am researching the Ibbotson family in Grimsby 1900 to present day, particularly looking for Alfred E Ibbotson born c 1909, served in the Navy in WW2.  Any help gratefully received.

Hi Sue

Yes, Rowlie's grandfather (George Coverdale) married my grandmother on my mother's side (Florence Smith/Beecham/Seed) in the early 1940s.  Incidentally, I see you have relatives from Caistor - my grandmother on my father's side was from Caistor - her name was Layton.

Thanks for trying!

Hi Ruth

Not sure if this is any help to you, but my father William Ibbotson was born at 75 Stortford St Little Coates Grimsby in 1909 . His father and mother Julia Hague were married in Grimsby in 1908. The family were originally from Oughtibridge Yorkshire and moved to Kent approx 1910

Hi David

Many thanks for your reply.  I'm not sure that there's any connection because my Ibbotsons were originally from Bedford, and then some of them moved to Grimsby.  My father (George William Ibbotson) was born there in 1903, and I was born there in 1947.  I would love there to be a connection, but I don't think there is, unless you know differently of course.

Kind regards
Ruth

Hi David

My dad's family (father and four brothers) were all involved in the fishing industry, although my dad was a local government officer, and we moved to Bristol in 1956.  Unfortunately, there are no members of that generation left for me to ask questions, and no shared history with my own generation.

Thanks for your reply.

Best wishes
Ruth

PS  I've just remembered that there was also some sort of theatrical link in the Ibbotson family, I think in my grandfather's generation!
