On the 1901 census, which you can see at www.automatedgenealogy.com Peter is listed as a Widow. There is a death registration for Mary Kirkness in 1900 in Arthur.
Here is a birth registration for twins:
Alice Elizabeth and Ann Elira Date of Birth: January 23, 1873 Father: Peter Kirkness Mother: Mary Scott Occupation of Father; Farmer Lot 8, Concession 6, Township of Arthur
Registration No. 024602 & 024603

Karen likely has the right fellow, here, as the 1871 shows one Peter Kirkness... the FHS site has him married to a Mary Scott , several children...
Hmmm, frustrating, as only Mary Ann and Robert show up 1881- Egremont with 4 sons:William, John, James & George and her brother, William shows up in the U.S...But parents Peter and Mary and what is perhaps a long list of children don't show up! I'll keep looking...

Found 'em with Twins! 1881 Arthur, Wellington North, Ontario Peter Kerkness 55 born Scotland is a Farmer Mary 45 Scotland Peter 23 / Farmer William 22 / Farmer James 19 / Cooper Sarah 14 / Cooper John 16 / Farmer George 13 Alice 8 Annie 8 Emma 6
Pedigree Resource File - Kirkness family- some spouses also listed... this is a submission, so is not really reliable...as Mary Ann & Robert's marriage is down as Jan 1, 1874.... Mary Ann Kirkness-1856 Peter Kirkness -1858 George Kirkness -1859 William Kirkness -1860 Toronto? James 1861 -Guelph,Wellington Jennie -1862 Margaret Jane -1862 Arthur,Wellington John R -1865 Sarah Kirkness -1867 George Kirkness -1869 Alice Kirkness- 1873 Arthur,Wellington Emma Isabel - 1874 Arthur,Wellington also some marriages listed...

This is suggested reading for those looking for passenger lists prior to 1865...

Hey, Karen, you must have put the twins on as I was looking around...( I missed seeing it!) They likely have all this, but it's always interesting to see what records are out there... I love looking at the copies of the census records..except the rolls & rolls of it... J.J.

Didnt have any of that information. Am now looking at Automated geneology and it is a great place to look. Thanks for all your help. Still dont know if its the people I am looking for but no doubt relatives of some sort. Would love to see which passenger lists they are on from Scotland.

The trouble is, memories for birth & immigration dates dwindle...but dates seem to coincide not to badly... For instance...The daughter Mary ann...says she was born Sept 5th 1855 in Ontario...(see 1901 census....they are still in Grey/ Egremont) J.J.
( birth dates are really great to have though! )

think he was still in Scotland in 1881. Have a few peters on that census. I should really talk more with my daughter in law as there are so many possibilities. Thank you for all your information.
