Lunatic Asylum St Julian (Bicton Heath)
« on: Friday 23 February 07 06:51 GMT (UK) »

Hello All,

I wonder if anyone has any information at all on the former Asylum at Shrewsbury,St Julian.I am trying to trace the death of my Gt Gt grandfather William COX who was born in Bilston, but lived Madeley/Broseley area with wife Emma SMITH. He was a cooper by trade. On the 1871 census he is certified 'lunatic' and I believe he may have died in the Asylum.Emma SMITH was a Broseley girl and her father was David.

Many thanks for any help.

Susan.

http://www.institutions.org.uk/asylums/england/SAL/shropshire_asylums.htm

Shropshire Record office have the records.

http://www.mdx.ac.uk/www/study/4_13_TA.htm

Click on the index on the right hand side of this page and then Bicton Heath. Read that section and click for the 'history continues below' and it will take you to a book on the asylum. The hospital is now called the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (Shelton), Bicton Heath, Shelton. The book is entitled Shelton Past and Present by Rosie Morris. There is a link which takes you to photographs.

Hello Valda,

Thank you for the very helpful information.I was particularly interested in the 'causes for admission',some of which caused me to smile. The photos are very good.

Thank you again,

Susan.
