Hi marette,

I have not looked at any of the sites in detail but there is a mass of information available on Google.   Search for convicts to Tasmania, VDL or Van Diemens Land;   for instance there were 10 ships which sailed to VDL in 1837.   I have seen some lists of convicts.

Good luck

Hi Barbara, Thomas Austin was b 8 May 1814 in England in Sherston Wiltshire, he was sent to VDL on the Susan1 for stealing fowls and trading and arrived here 21 Nov 1843. He married Ann Kelly b 1824 from Liverpool in Campbell Town Tasmania on 1 May 1846. They hadGeorge 1846, Elizabeth 1854, Thomas 1856, M Austin 1858, James 1861 and Ann1863 . He died in Launceston Tasmania 1 March 1868. I think his parents were William and Elizabeth. What is the difference between Sherston and Sherston Magna please.

OK Marette
A few more questions
Where did you get his date and place of birth from?
Why do you think his parents were William and Elizabeth.
The reason I am asking is that we have to get back to definite information before we can progress.  It is so easy to base a whole line of research on a false assumption!
I am not an expert on Wiltshire - I just saw that you had a number of posts and that you seemed to be going round in circles! I will have to look up Sherston and Sherston Magna.

Hi Marette
As far as I'm aware Sherston is just an abbeviation for Sherston Magna, a parish about 6 miles south west of Malmesbury in north Wiltshire.   The parish also includes Sherston Parva.

Unfortunately I'm away from Wiltshire for the next few weeks, but court records do exist as do records of the prisons where the convicted were held prior to transportation.   I've looked them up for others in Oz.   You may wish to contact the Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office (WSRO) wsro@wiltshire.gov.uk or
Tel: 00441225713138 or Fax:  00441225713515

If no joy send me a PM in a few weeks and I'll see what I can do.

Cheers Dave

I have had a look at the Sherston/Sherston Magna issue.
As far as I can see Sherston Magna is the full name of the parish which includes Sherston Parva or Sherston Pinkney (hamlets I presume).
So Sherston and Sherston Magna for our purposes are the same place.

See the Wiltshire Research Planning Aid for what records are available for Sherston Magna

There is good coverage for baptisms & marriages on the IGI & BVRI (2).

I got his birth date and Sherston England from a bible but that was all in it and then I found out he was convicted and found his permission to marry it's the english side that  I find confusing, someone looked up IGI and B-VRI and came up with William and Elizabeth. There are heaps of Austins in Berkshire but I thought I had better stick with Sherston first. you are right I am like a chook without a head. In Australia it's easy but overseas is another story.

It is confusing trying to research in England prior to civil registration Marette. Don't worry about it.  Smiley
I think there are 2 plans of action.
First we can find out more about the possible family in Sherston.  If, for example, we find the Thomas born in Sherston is still in England in the censuses we will know he is not yours.  I will start having a look at this for you.
Second, I think you need to try to find the court records as suggested by Dave. As there is a good possibility that your man came from Wiltshire then an email to the record office would be sensible.
If we prove that the Wiltshire Thomas is not your man then we can start looking further afield.
Do you know when Thomas left England? If he was here in 1841 we might be able to find him on the 1841 census.

Will get back to you.

Hello Marette

Shirley posted these baptism details in response to one of your other posts

AUSTIN, William Eliazar Chr 1810 Engl Wilt SherMa
Fa: William AUSTIN
Mo: Betty
AUSTIN, George Chr 1812 Engl Wilt SherMa
Fa: William AUSTIN
Mo: Betty
AUSTIN, Thomas Chr 1814 Engl Wilt SherMa
Fa: William AUSTIN
Mo: Elizabeth
AUSTIN, Rebecca Chr 1816 Engl Wilt SherMa
Fa: William AUSTIN

AUSTIN, Charles Chr 1819 Engl Wilt SherMa
Fa: William AUSTIN

AUSTIN, Elizabeth Chr 1821 Engl Wilt SherMa
Fa: William AUSTIN

AUSTIN, Elizabeth Chr 1823 Engl Wilt SherMa
Fa: William AUSTIN
Mo: Elizabeth
AUSTIN, Sarah Chr 1823 Engl Wilt SherMa
Fa: William AUSTIN
Mo: Elizabeth
AUSTIN, John Chr 1824 Engl Wilt SherMa
Fa: William AUSTIN
Mo: Elizabeth

In the 1841 census
High Street, Sherston
Elizabeth Austin 55 Ind
Charles 22
John 15
All born in County

This looks like the remains of the family identified by Shirley.

I cannot see a Thomas Austin b Sherston in the 1851 or 1861 censuses who fits.  The 1841 census is more difficult to check as it does not show place of birth but again I cannot see a Thomas who meets your criteria.

However, this does not mean that the Thomas b1814 in Sherston to William and Elizabeth is definitely your man. He might have died, emigrated etc.  But it does mean that we cannot yet rule him out.

Think you now need to get those court records.

Barbara
