Prison records
« on: Friday 23 February 07 21:37 GMT (UK) »

Hi can anyone help me,
I found out on the Poor Relief that my 4 x great grandfather was in prison for 60m days. He assaulted his son while drunk  Shocked
They were living in Dumbarton.
Any idea which prison he would have been sent too?
Would the records have survived.
He was in prison Feb 1853.

Thank you.

Hi

I don't know what prison he would have been placed in, although there was a small prison in Dumbarton.  I don't know if it was just attached to the Sherrif Court and for prisoners who were attending court, but I am sure the Nationa Archives of Scotland would have information about prisoners and prisons.  They have an online catalogue and you could e-mail them the question.

I will have a look on the NAS site, and also send them an email.

I have just come back from Scotland.
I sent a day at Edinburgh, NAS.
I found the prison records and have ordered them.Should get them in 2.5 weeks. They make interesting reading lol
They were in Paisley Jail.

Is it still there?
I'll have to visit Paisley next time.
