John HASELDINE - baptism / parents
« on: Sunday 25 February 07 08:41 GMT (UK) »

Good morning,

Looking for parents of John Haseldine (alternate spellings Hazeldine, Haseltine) born about 1780 - not sure where. He married Mary Partridge on 21/Sept/1801 at Bedford St Peter. Turns out this Mary born 1781 Felmersham/Bletsoe, is daughter of Thomas Partridge & Martha Swannell; & John & Mary Haseltine get a mention in the will of William Swannell in 1807.

John Haseltine is described as a poulterer, & died before 1841 census. I cannot find a christening in Bedfordshire, but a possible one (member entry on IGI) is found in Raunds Northants.

Thanks John

Hi John

What a coincidence that within 20 minutes we both post requests for Haseldine!

There's a John Haselldine age 55 buried at Bfd St Cuthberts on 11 Sept 1825 and a Mary Haseldine age 73 buried on 14 May 1852 at Bfd St Paul.

The previous Haseldine burial in Beds before John in 1825 was way back in 1758 so it does seem as though he may have been from out of county.

Regards

David

Thanks David,  for the burial information.

Using the Surname Interests table, a lady named Dee has Haseldines..from Raunds...;  but unfortunately this here John is not one that she knows.

Hi John and David

Now come on you two how come you missed me out. LOL.

Alot of the relative's of Dee are also in my tree.  Smiley

I have numerous Raunds Parish/Methodist Records (although much later)  so I guess
you mean the 1780 one could be your's John.

May I suggest you take a trip to the B.R.O. and see if the witnesses on the
marriage certficate might be a rellie I know how helpful you are.

P.M. me if you need anything else in the mean time.  Smiley

Now no rude comments pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Just off to buy a new bathroon suite before the sale ends tomorrow.

Either of you a plumber.  Smiley

Cheers Sandy

Sandy,

Hello, thanks for interest - I was thinking, Northants - Sandy will help, but you got in first.

I am researching this new found family link with 2 other parties, one in Ottawa & the other in Washington. This all follows on from me replying to a query on the BHFS guest book. I was told that Mary P was from Radwell, Felmersham from the marriage entry, so I've just emailed them to see if they know the witness names.

John

The Haselden family was a fairly prominent one at Goldington Bury in the 1600s and earlier. Let me know if you get back this far - they were the only ones in Beds at that time, so there must be a chance that your Haseldine is connected. One of them married a daughter of my Cople Spencers c1520.

Sandy - I'll he happy to help with the new bathroom. I just looked up "changing tap washer" on google and it seems a bit complicated but I'll give it a go!

Hi David

Not sure if Raunds is a link yet.  Grin

Brilliant to see you can get back as far as 1500's. (ENVIOUS)

As to bathroom suite our son picked it up for us last night cost me a meal at P.H.

So thanks for the offer (tongue in cheek) but couldn't afford the rates from France and
no I do not do B & B besides your way would be beautiful scenery.  Grin

Don't worry won't fly or go on water as I suffer from middle ear off balance
(besides being a coward) so I like my feet firmly on the ground.

Hello David & Sandy,

Sandy, hope you've not flooded any thing yet.

Anyway ... my contacts in Canada do not have any witness details from the marriage of John H & Mary P; so I sent off email to Beds Archives last night & got an excellent reply this morning as follows ... all for no charge ...

John Haseldine and Mary Partridge were married by licence at St Peters on 21 September 1801.  They married by licence as Mary was a minor (under 21).  The licence, dated 19 September 1801 states that Mary is a spinster of Radwell in the parish of Felmersham, the daughter of Thomas Partridge who stands surety for the marriage.  John is a bachelor of St Peters, aged 21 or above and a poulterer by profession.  Mary signed her name whilst John made his mark.  The witnesses were Thomas Carver and Mary Burt.

That I think is douze points to the Beds Archives service....
So Sandy, do you know any of these witnesses ?

David, thanks for the Goldington info - just think of it like this - we might find out we're related ....

David, also can you recheck the burial of Mary Haseldine you provided; I have Mary wife of John, with death index in June quarter 1852.

Regards
John

What do you expect before the sun is over the yard arm? (I must have been rushing as I was late for church). You're lucky it was only 100 years out.

Apologies, it should have read 1852 (it does, now I've altered it!), which makes much more sense of what I wrote, and also fits perfectly with your death entry.

No chance - the Haseldens are only in mine by marriage to  a sister of one of my direct line Spencers! But what a hoot if we were - the excuse for the Bedford Arms next trip back to Bedford would be a family reunion!

All the best

Hi you 2.  Smiley

Sorry not getting notification of replies to topics.

No one in Raunds of those names of the witnesses so no tying up with John coming from the area yet.

Just being given access to the transcribed Monumental Inscriptions of St Cuthberts, Bedford - surveyed 1915 (courtesy of the Beds FHS) - there's an entry :-

'In memory of John Haseldine who died suddenly Sept 7th 1825 aged 55 years.'

Is this on the NBI  ? & is there then a baptism of him in 1760 1770 ?

Yes. 11 Sep 1825 John Haselldine 55 Bfd St Cuthberts. Same answer as I gave you on 25 Feb last year! Was he described as a poulterer, that's the question.

The previous Haseldine and variations burial was in 1758 so the family may have been from out of county. (just noticed I said exactly the same thing last year!). That black hole Northants perhaps?

David

      1825
         55 -
      1770

That makes him 31 on marriage - could he have been married before?

The marriage entry details as provided by Beds Archives say he was a bachelor

Thanks for correcting my maths..  so publicly

I'd wondered about a Raunds marriage on the IGI -Member submitted of a marriage to Carter in 1794. I have a number of second marriages where the previous marriage is not indicated by widow/er, so I wouldn't necessarily rely on the fact that he is stated to be a bachelor.

It might be interesting to see if an occupation was given on the 1794 marriage

Clutching at straws I know, but when you're stuck....
