I have gone back as far as the 1841 census and now i have come to a grinding halt. Im looking for the Rhodes family from Dudley. Samuel, Elizabeth, Joseph,William and Henery and, in 1841 they were in Oakeywell Street Dudley, he was a glass maker and she was a nailor (i think thats what it says). Can anyone help me out as to where I should be lookin now?
Thanks in advance
Alan

From the IGI
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
no where near a complete index of parish registers (baptism and marriages) mostly pre 1837 but a useful start.
HENRY RHODES Birth: 26 JUL 1840 Christening: 23 AUG 1840 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester Father: SAMUEL RHODES Mother: ELIZABETH
WILLIAM RHODES Christening: 03 APR 1836 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester Father: SAMUEL RHODES Mother: ELIZABETH
JOSEPH RHODES Birth: 06 AUG 1833 Christening: 03 NOV 1833 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester Father: SAMUEL RHODES Mother: ELIZABETH
Henry Rhodes birth certificate will give you his mother's maiden name. The only one of the three children on the 1841 census born after the atart of civil registration in July 1837. This website will give you information on what you can expect to find in parish registers pre 1837.
http://www.kenaud.dircon.co.uk/parish.htm
The marriage of Samuel and Elizabeth will be pre civil registration. If it cannot be found on the IGI (and you need to gean as much information as you can from the actual record itself, since any information is helpful once you are looking at records pre census and pre civil registration, then I would try a search in the BMSGH indexes
http://www.bmsgh.org/

A possible baptism for Samuel from his age and birthplace on the 1851 and 1861 censuses.
SAMUEL RHODES Christening: 25 DEC 1807 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester, Father: SAMUEL RHODES Mother: MARY
plus siblings
SARAH RHODES Christening: 14 APR 1805 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester Father: SAMUEL RHODES Mother: MARY
NANCY RHODES Christening: 06 JUN 1802 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester Father: SAMUEL RHODES Mother: MARY
SARAH RHODES Christening: 03 AUG 1800 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester Father: SAMUEL RHODES Mother: MARY
JOHN RHODES Christening: 12 MAR 1797 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester Father: SAMUEL RHODES Mother: MARY
WILLIAM RHODES Christening: 12 OCT 1794 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester Father: SAMUEL RHODES Mother: MARY
HANNAH RHODES Christening: 28 OCT 1792 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester Father: SAMUEL RHODES Mother: MARY
Not extracted from a parish record but submitted to the IGI by a Mormon church member - like all records not taken directly from a source it should be treated with caution.
SAMUEL RHODES MARY WHITEHOUSE Marriage: 18 DEC 1791 St Thomas, Dudley, Worcester
1841 census HO107 1196/5 folio 15 page 22 The Dock Dudley Worcestershire William Herrington 50 Not born Worcestershire Stan? Hannah Herrington 45 Worcestershire Samuel Rhodes 73 Worcestershire Ind(ependent) Mary Rhodes 70 Not born Worcestershire Ind(ependent)
On the 1841 census adult ages are usually rounded down to the nearest 5.
Possible death registration
Deaths Mar 1844 RHODES Samuel Dudley 18 233
Possible baptism for a Samuel Rhodes in Dudley
SAML RHODES Christening: 25 DEC 1767 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester, Father: SAML RHODES Mother: MARY
Again a record to be treated with caution submitted by a church member - the BMSGH indexes will confirm the entry.
SAMUEL ROADS MARY WHILE Marriage: 14 DEC 1755 Dudley, Worcester
Possible sibling
WILLIAM RHODES Christening: 05 AUG 1774 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester Father: SAMUEL RHODES Mother: MARY
Earlier sibling records are on the IGI submitted by a church member, as extracted records from St. Thomas Dudley parish registers for the IGI only start around this time.
All these are just indexed entries you really need to check the actual parish registers themselves to confirm and supplement the information and especially to check against the burial register, just in case any of these possible Samuels died young. Regards
Valda

Thanks so much for your help on this, I am fairly new to this and was doing OK until the census's ran out. You mention the BMSGH, what is it and how do i get to see it, you also mention seeing the Parish registers, where are they kept and how do I get about seeing them? Sorry to be a pain but like i said 'I'm stuck' Regards Alan

Speaking of Dudley nailors, I thought that this was interesting:
'Herbert Hancox (1712-1772) - mayor in 1764 - was Abiathar's younger brother. They were both sons of Abiathar and Judith Hancox of Dudley. The elder Abiathar was a nailor of the town but, far from suffering the impoverishment so often associated with such a humble trade, he was also Yeoman and landholder, whose children did equally well for themselves in the early 18th century.' http://www.blackcountrysociety.co.uk/articles/dudleymayors.htm
This includes a nice photo:
The Black Country Nail Trade http://www.sedgleymanor.com/trades/nailmakers2.html
Nailed to the Poverty Line by Geraldine Sheridan 'One of the most spirited of all the revolts was in the spring of 1842. Nailers actually seized several nail masters and marched them from Old Hill to Dudley where the Riot Act was read. The militia from Birmingham were called out and the nailers made special nails called 'Tis as it is as it was’, to slow down the horses. The tiswas nails were made by putting three nails together so that whichever way it was thrown a sharp point would always be sticking up.But the tiswas nails didn't stop the militia. The masters were eventually released and the mob of nail makers driven from the town. The nail makers never benefited very much from the strikes because they were up against such tough opposition. And the only result was often an increase in poverty, illness and death. ' http://www.qlhs.org.uk/oracle/poverty-line/poverty-line.html
A Brief History of Halesowen 'Nailmaking was the main post medieval industry and many of the mills were in use for slitting and iron production. During the Civil War Halesowen supplied shot to the garrison of Dudley Castle at £14 a ton. William Shenstone, 1713 – 1763, at the nearby Leasowes complained that nailers surrounded him.' http://www.dudley.gov.uk/community-and-living/town-centre-management/halesowen-town-centre/a-brief-history-of-halesowen
Black Country Living Museum ~ Nail Shop Nail making was a well-established trade in the Black Country; at its peak around 1820 there were over 50,000 nailers at work in the area. Principle centres were Sedgley, Gornal, the Lye, Halesowen, Oldhill and Dudley. http://www.bclm.co.uk/map31.htm

Thanks Tricia thats really interesting because Elizabeths grandson Edgar was also a nail caster, it seems nails and glass run in the family. Unfortunately Benjamin is a new name on me unless he's one I haven't found yet.
Thanks again
Alan

Hi Alan,
If your family were in the old county of Worcestershire, then the BMSGH have a Worcestershire Marriage Index. A visit to Worcester Record Office should help. These transcriptions are searchable by bride or groom, although I hear the groom search is more accurate. They run from 1700 to 1837. If you can't get to the record office try http://www.bmsgh.org/search/Wo_marr_index.html This index is 1660-1837.
These records are NOT available on line.
Mike
