Hi, I decided to start a new post for this, as the old one was getting a bit cumbersome !
I'm looking for the Mellish family below, especially both Fanny & Frances (who I thought were one & the same person, but now appear to be two different people !). It is just possible that one or both of these girls were in Richmond Surrey (there seems to be a strong Mellish link with Richmond), & I will post this on the Surrey board as well, just in case !
This is how the family appeared in 1861: Richard; MELLISH Jun; head; mar; 33; farm bailiff; Powerstock; F116P14 Lydia; MELLISH; wife; mar; 32; bailiff's wife; Swyre; F116P14 Rachell; MELLISH; daur; ; 11; ; Litton Cheney; F116P14 Fanny; MELLISH; daur; ; 9; scholar; Litton Cheney; F116P14 Frances; MELLISH; daur; ; 7; scholar; Litton Cheney; F116P14 George; MELLISH; son; ; 5; scholar; Surry Richmond; F116P14 [Walter George?] Isaac; MELLISH; son; ; 3; ; Surry Richmond; F116P14 Ann; MELLISH; dau; ; 2; ; Litton Cheney; F116P14 Matilda; MELLISH; daur; ; 3m; ; Litton Cheney; F117P15
Thanks in anticipation, Cheers, Chris

Hi Alli,
Wow, you have been busy !!!! Thanks very much for all this - I did have some parts of some of the details, but this rounds it out nicely !
Now here's a little conundrum for you: Frances Ann Mellish b 1854 Richmond Surrey - sometimes she gives her place of birth as Richmond Surrey, other times as various bits of Dorset (her family came from Litton Cheney). I've got her in 1861 & 1871, but then it gets a bit complicated ! Another rootschatter has found a marriage of a Frances Ann in Richmond to a James Edwards, and they are in 1881 with two children. However, yet another rootschatter has a birth certificate that gives mothers name as Frances nee Mellish, and her husband is a William Clarke. There is a family of William, Frances and children in 1891 living in Farnborough Hants, when Frances gives Dorset as place of birth. Just to further muddy the waters, Frances had an older sister called Fanny, who is my connection, who was born in Dorset, but was married to Ambrose Selby and is in 1891 with him.
So, what I/we need to know is:- can anyone find a marriage between a William Clarke & a Frances Mellish; or possibly a Frances Edwards (on the basis that maybe James & the first children died..... ) Do James Edwards & a wife feature in 1891 ? Are there any baptisms of children called Henry or Edith Clarke (I found Jun 1884 Clarke James Henry Farnham 2a 126 and Sep 1890 Clarke Edith Jane Farnham 2a 1_6 which I think are the right two) - I think there are also children called Maud and Elizabeth.
I'm spending far too much time on this, but it's really bugging me
Cheers, Chris

Hi Alli,
To answer your last post first, Fanny nee Lawson died Jun Q 1882 , and Ambrose promptly re-married in JunQ 1882 Ringwood (Hants) to Fanny Mellish !! She was a 30 year old spinster living with her parents & family in 1881 in Swanage Dorset - not far from Ambrose & Fanny 1 ! This led to all sorts of confusion cos Ambrose was always there with his wife Fanny, but the ages didn't fit !!!
It's interesting to see that Frances wasn't at home in 1891 - maybe she did run off with a handsome soldier after all !!!! By 1901 I expect James Edwards had decided she might as well be dead, although as she hasn't been found then and her younger (Clarke) children (assuming it's the same person !) were pauper children in a school, Frances could have been (not found tho !)
I had a look on FreeBMD for Frances death under Clarke, Clark, and Edwards, but the only one of anywhere near the right age was in Sculcoates (Lincs?), and I can't imagine why she would be there !! It's beginning to look as tho we'll never know exactly what happened !
Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris Just searching for Mellish references on the internet and came across this post. Richard and Lydia Mellish are my 2 x great grandparents. Their daughter Alice married my great grandfather Amos Smith in Swanage, Dorset in 1899.
I believe I now have the marriage details of all the siblings. Fanny died in her 90s in or around East Sheen, and from what you say she might be an ancestor of yours. I too can't find what happened to Frances although strangely enough some of my relatives here in Dorset did keep in touch with her grandchildren into the 1950s.
I've got some old photos and believe that one may show Lydia, who died in Swanage in 1912. Do you have a picture of Fanny?
It would be great to swap more information, so let me know if you want to know about any of the other family members.
Best wishes
Martin
