Thatcham Riots
« on: Yesterday at 18:41:31 »

Hi

I am trying to find out if a member of a family was part of the Thatcham riots in c.1830

Does anyone have access to a list of those involved/convicted?  As I understand it, they were not listed in the usual court procedure but that trials were conducted especially and resulting sentences listed seperately.  Could be wrong here, so any guidance on anything to do with the riots would be much appreciated.

I am specifically looking for any with the Brooks/Brookes surname as this family were living as agricultural labourers in the Thatcham/Newbury area at this time.  I want to go to the Berks record office but not sure what to look for.

Thanks
Flosse

There were special sessions held to try the Berkshire rioters, all fully recorded. Jill Chamber's book 'Berkshire Machine Breakers' or perhaps Norman Fox's 'From Berkshire to Botany Bay' for details.
