Hi
following on from all that has been posted, I reckon now the Thomas I saw in 1841 is probably a brother or cousinto Mary Ann as he too was a Mariner Here are his details
Thomas 25 Mariner Susan 25 Ellen 3 James 6 weeks All born in County Living at Upper Pill Street, Easton In Gordano HO107/0956/5 page 9
I think you can add him to your collection of Harris's

Hi Julie
My experience with death and obituary records is that the people who give the information are usually spot on with the day and month of their relative's birth, since they always remember birthdays. The exact year is a bit more dubious, especially when the deceased person is of a good age I think you can be certain that the birthday was 1st April but the year is much more likely to be the same as the baptism and definitely not later!!!
As far as the spelling of names is concerned, I shouldn't worry overmuch - the main Phoebe in my own line is usually entered in the records phonetically and the spelling depends on the education of the person writing the record - I've not had Phobe before but I have had Phoebe, Phebe, Febe, Feby and several more...
Geoff - about FreeReg - I've been doing some transcribing for them (and am falling behind ) but they keep me informed and I know they have at least 37 transcribers and nearly 400,000 records for Somerset alone, which is the county with the most records transcribed so far. Staffordshire is just behind. I've had a couple of new parishes of interest come on line there in the past couple of weeks and they update quite frequently, so do keep an eye on it. There is a county page showing which Somerset parishes have been transcribed - http://www.freereg.org.uk/parishes/som.htm so do check!
Best wishes
Angela

Hi Angela
Thank you so much, you are a star. It all makes sense now
I have been researching Mary Ann as part of research into her second husband Nimrod Soffe, my ancestor. She had 5 five children in Cardiff with her first husband Joseph Sturges , three of which died, two remained in England with their father when she went to America. The three that died, I have found a record for one , the other two are proving a problem, even with birth and death certificates no baptism/burials can be found! So Wales is my next destination
Its seems a little 'spokey' that I found Mary Ann Harris.....my maiden name is also Harris, middle name Ann! But as far as I know we are not related, I was born in Oxford. But then again......................
Thank you so much for your help.
Kindest Regards Julie
