St Pancras Old Church records around 1800
« on: Wednesday 24 November 04 17:52 GMT (UK) »

Hello, I am trying to get some details of my Gt Gt Grandfather's birth and family  in 1806. Thanks to a very helpful lookup we have recently pinpointed him in the 1851 census and I think he is possibly the William Perring  who pops up on the lds search engine as being christened at St Pancras Old Church in 1806. His parents are listed as Charles and Margaret.

Does anyone know whether any further details is kept in the registers anywhere or is that all there is? And might there be a marriage of Charles and Margaret recorded around 1800 - if so where might I look for that?

Very grateful for any guidance as to where to look next. Thanks very much.

Hello,

Is your William PERRING any connection of the William PERRING who was the first husband of my 2x great-grandmother Eliza Ann WATSON? Her marriage to him, according to IGI for what that's worth, was at St Giles Cripplegate, 15 Dec 1844; her second marriage, to Charles Robert CHADWICK, my 2x great-grandfather, was at St Mary's Paddington, 20 May 1850. I have found it quite difficult to follow up the PERRING connection. (I presume, of course, that if your William is still around in 1851, there are likely to be two different Williams.)

Best wishes

Hello Geoff my William Perring was indeed married to an Eliza but earlier I think than 1844. By 1851 they had a string of children up to 19 years old. Eliza is later recorded as a widow living with Wm Perring jr in 1881 census. So I guess there must be two William Perrings around this time. Are you claiming the William P born St Pancras in 1806 as yours? He matches up both age and birthplace with mine in the 1851 census!
My William P was an artist with ginger hair - this may not eliminate him from enquiries but every little helps...
My Eliza by the way was born in Kent around 1811.

This is complicated.  I don't know when my William P was born or died, nor when his Eliza Ann was born or died. I realized after posting that the reality is even more complicated, with Eliza Ann apparently having three husbands (unless the record contains an error). The only firm evidence I have of either of them comes from Eliza Ann's marriage certificate to Charles Robert CHADWICK and the birth certificate and marriage certificate of their daughter Eliza Ann CHADWICK. Here it all is:

Marriage of Eliza Ann PERRING widow to Charles Robert CHADWICK widower, 20 May 1850, St Mary's Paddington by banns, both of full age, both resident in the Harrow Road; groom's occupation: office clerk; groom's father: Charles CHADWICK, publican; bride's father: John WATSON, coachmaker; bride signs with "X her mark"; witnesses: Edward BURDEN, Francis JONES

Birth certificate of Eliza Ann CHADWICK, born 18 Mar 1851, 21 Elstree Street, Somers Town; father: Charles Robert CHADWICK; mother: Eliza Ann CHADWICK late PERRING formerly HALL; father's occupation: gentleman

Marriage of Eliza Ann CHADWICK spinster to James CHEW bachelor, 2 Oct 1870, Old St Pancras Church, by banns, both of full age, both resident in "St Pancras"; groom's occupation: timekeeper; groom's father: John Baker CHEW, horsekeeper; bride's father: "Dead"; witnesses: Philip DUDLEY [a friend of the groom's from Northants], Mary MARSHALL

No idea, of course, what any of them looked like.  I do know that family rumour said that Eliza Ann CHADWICK married beneath her and that James CHEW my great-grandfather was a bad lot.

Cheers

Sounds very complicated Geoff and I can't see how our two characters can be connected given the dates you mention!

But thanks for the idea.

Still looking for any info about St Pancras church records around 1800 if anyone has any?

Have you looked for your ancestors on the   family search website . I have found a lot of my people on this website.

Their web address is www.familysearch.org.  Just click search and then type in details of your ancestor in the boxes, and then a list of entries for this name will appear.  This will be IGI entries, census entries for 1881 with that name and any pedigree entries.  Not all information is on there but at least you can look for your ancestor here.

Another easy site to look at for Old Church St Pancras is on the following site
http://freepages.geneaology.rootsweb.com/hughwallis/IgiBatchNumbers. The IGI listings give details of births and christenings and marriages normally.

When you are into the site just click London (including middlesex N - Z, then on the next page click letter 'S' this will take you to the page where St Pancras is listed.  Under St Pancras you will find the Old Church St Pancras with a list of C number and M numbers.  The dates refer to the period you are looking at  and the C numbers are a list of christenings for the dates given. The M numbers are for marriages.   Look for the date you are seeking for a christening or a marriage and then click the C  or M reference.  A box will then come asking for the surname you are looking for - type in the surname you are looking for and then all the entires on this batch will found.  You can then look through them to see if your entry is there.

Sometimes you are lucky and you find other names appearing on the same batch number with the same parents, so you may find brothers and sisters that were also christened at the same church.  Dont forget to look at a slightly earlier date or later date incase other people are in a different batch number.

There is some good information on wwwcyndislist.com. look under St Pancras.  There you will find information on where to find parish records for Old Church, the IGI listings which I mention above and lots of other interesting information.

Sometimes it is worth just typing in old church st pancras in a search engine and see what comes up with.
Hope you understand.  Let me know if you have any more queries.

Looking for a death entry for a Frances McMASTER nee NICHOLS, c1823. Died whilst living at 21 King Street, Seven Dials. Wife of David McMASTER.

I know that St. Pancras is out of their Parish but I have found that while still living at King Street David McMASTER remarried in 1825 at St. Pancras, Old Church.

With regards to baptism registers of St Pancras c1806:  Prior to 1812, there was no requirement to put anything other than child's forename, parent's forenames and surname, date of baptism.

Sometimes you get lucky and it might give an occupation for the father and/or an abode but it wasn't required.

I haven't actually searched the Pancras registers myself so can't say if there is likely to be anything else listed but I would always check everything found on the IGI if possible - just treat it as it is - an index to the original records.

Good luck
