Hello All,

Does anyone know if there any listings of Westmorland village residents that you are aware of, between the Hearth Tax of 1674 and the Window Tax list for 1777 (from genuki.org.uk)?

Well not via genuki but ...

.. .there may be land tax records.  I have some for Crosby Ravensworth for 1765.  Also for around 1702-4 I have some poor relief stuff and rents for CR from the Lowther estate records.  Similar may exist for your parish.

There's also the 1669-72 hearth tax online which provides a bit more info than the 1674.

Thanks for your reply. A researcher friend rang Kendal Record's office & found that there are land tax records for the village of Dufton dated 1765 & 1773.

I have seen the 1666/72 hearth tax online thanks.

In Crosby Ravensworth land tax, would you mind looking to see if you have any Ellwoods/Elwoods or Dovers?

The CR 1765 land tax only lists the owners not occupiers and excludes Birkbeck Fells.  There are no Ellwoods nor Dovers.

There are Ellwoods in the CR 1809 land tax.  Any interest?

1809 land tax for Crosby Ravensworth (but CR and Maulds Meaburn townships only covered):

In CR township - none

In Maulds Meaburn township for the year ended 5 April 1810:
William Ellwood occupying a property owned by Mr J Wilkinson assessed at 9s 3.25d
John Ellwood occupying a property owned by Mr Thomas Wilkinson assessed at £2 9s 4.5d
William Ellwood occupying a property owned by Mrs Thwaites assessed at £1 15s 9.5d
Collector: William Ellwood

Hope that helps.

Did you ever order any CR Ellwood wills?  If so, I would be very interested in any transcripts that you have.  (Well up until about the mid 19th century anyway.)

I have only one CR will for John Ellwood of Blasterfield dated 1884. John was born 1807 Bongate, son of William Ellwood (b Dufton) & Ann Simpson.

Sorry to hi-jack your thread but I wondered if you had connections with the following:

John Ellwood b1800 in Cartmel married Eleanor Harrington b1800 during Dec 1825 at Bootle in  Whitehaven

Margaret Ellwood (dau of above) b1830 in Gosforth married William Harrison b1826 Elslack, Yorks during July 1853 at Gosforth

John and Eleanor were my 3x gr grandparents through my Harrison line.

can anyone tell who william bell born11-4-1823 in westmorland parents are where they lived. he married margaret blades robinson she was born 4-19-1837 in cumberland. i do not have their marriage date but they were in usa in 1860

Welcome to rootschat.  You might be better starting a new thread for this on the Westmorland Look ups board.  Put the names in the title.  Unfortunately Bell and Robinson are very common names in that area - there are hundreds of them so give as much information as you can.   Westmoralnd is a large county too.  Have you looked at www.familysearch.org?  The combination of Blades and Robinson might be a very helpful clue.  How annoying that Margaret was born just before civil registration started.  Do you think they married in the UK?  Yes - they did.  Found it on FreeBMD.   William Bell and Margaret Blades Robinson Apr/Jun 1859 Ulverston 8e 839.  Your best bet will be to order that certificate as it will give the names and occupations of both fathers and then you might find them on the census for 1851.  Ulverston registration district covers quite a wide area.
