Ruth Maycock - Huntingdon
« on: Thursday 20 January 05 07:36 UTC (UK) »

Could someone please look up on the 1891 Census for a Ruth Maycock (born 1859 Huntingdon) married William Allen 1882 at Huntingdon.  That's all the info I have - trying to rule out as my great grandparents.  Maycock could have been mistaken for Ruth May Clark when coming to Australia.  I hope so anyway.   Much appreciated

thanks yet again - I owe you a few drinks.

It's just another one we are looking at as Ruth Maycock did not show up on the 1881 census.  Do you know if they had any kids at all and if so, names etc, also on the 1891 census.

Thanks heaps - sorry but I'm just trying different lines so we cover our bases and can rule things out.

It was just them two on the 1891 census.

However, here they are in 1901:

Huntingdon

William ALLEN head mar 44 foreman? steam plough b.Wyauntham? Hunts
Ruth wife 41 b.Ramsey Hunts
Mary dau 5 b.Huntingdon Hunts
David SEABY/SEALEY unmarried boarder 45 labourer steam plough b.Sawtry Hunts

RG13/1475 folio 9 page 10

MAYCOCK is a surname in it's own right (quite common in parts)  but I appreciate your idea of a possible "MAY CLARK" misinterpretation.

Have you managed to get in touch with descendants of all your "pop's" kids - just in case somebody knows something just a little different?

Thanks - pop had 11 kids my dad, and 2 others are all that's left.  They know absolutely nothing as they didn't talk about it back then.  I think my cousin and myself are figuring out alot more than what they know.
I'm starting to go 60% we are Blackmores and the other 40% well who knows.

Hi
I have a William Maycock in my family tree, born in Huntingdonshire, 1886. Married a Lucy at Ramsey, Huntingdonshire in 1916. I have been unable to find any trace of either of them after that date. We are of the opinion that they skipped the country, but who knows where.

The National Archives has a medal card index at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp

In one of your earlier posts you mentioned that upon marriage William was described as a soldier in the Northants Regiment, aged 40 in 1916.

The index has the following

Description
Medal card of Maycock, William
Corps   Regiment No   Rank
Northamptonshire Regiment    18810    Private
Labour Corps    480526    Private
Date    1914-1920
Catalogue reference    WO 372/13links to the Catalogue

I've never gained much from this medal list, but if you're desperate you never know where it might lead, and it'll only cost you £3-50 to download the image.
