Hi Salty,

As you say, not the best of pics for detail, but I reckon that his collar dogs have a Sphinxy shape about them. The two regiments that I can think of that had Sphinx collar dogs (there might be more tho) were the Lincolnshire Regiment (10th Foot) and the South Wales Borderers (24th Foot).

Of the two , I would go for the 24th Foot, compare with this pic of Henry Hook V.C of Zulu war fame, the only possible difference that I can see is the white trim on the eppaulettes, other than that.....

Hi Annie and Mick,

Thank you both for your replies. The problem is, the photo was sent to me a little while ago by a friend in Bitmap or something and I havent got a clue how to change it to jpeg. My scanner was on the blink when she sent it and I have only just got it up and running again.
What I have done is to print it off and scanned it again, but it doesn't come out very well. I wish I was that clever with these things.

On the original which is not that clear I have tried blowing it up on my screen. The image is not very clear, but can I put this theory to you.

Royal Marine cap badge with either the Nelson Batt or Anson Batt Royal Naval Div badges on the collar??

Probably sounds ridiculous, but the cap badge does resemble the RM.

In the mean time I will get back to the lady and see if she has any more info.

Thank you both again

Thanks Chris,

That looks an awful lot better than my effort.

Annie, sorry, I only know about 4.5" and 6" guns that were fired from ships. I haven't got a clue what that one is.

no it's a lot later than that

i think ( and i'm not a rifle expert by any means) that it's an early enfield or metford

what we do know is that he's a sergeant, he's a good shot ( marksman badges), if i had to guess a date, i'd say around early 1900's, an firearms expert should be able to date the rifle, as to when it was issued

I think it's a Lee Enfield.

Ah yes! The Manchester's, how could I forget? Grin

The photo is better but I'm still not sure about the regiment....I'll stick with the SWB for now.  Undecided

if it is a lee enfield, then i would say he's a regular, the territorials were still using out-dated rifles in 1914

if and i mean IF we are looking at a manchester, it's possible he could be wearing on of these

the badge was worn by officers and senior NCO's but this is a guess

of course what we haven't asked is his name!!!

Hmmm....I'm also puzzled by the cap badge (what we can see of it) it does looks like it might have a crown on top, unless it's a mark on the pic. Undecided
