Glatton baptisms are on the BVRI, but there's no Edmund Houghton.
The closest is Edward Houghton son of Alice Houghton on 4 May 1817
There is no marriage of Edmund Houghton on Hunts Marriage Index 1754-1837, nor is there a burial in Hunts that I can see (and no Houghton burials in Glatton at all)
I've tried looking for an Edmund in censuses - please put me out of my misery and tell me where your Edmund is hiding!
Sorry this has been a total flopperoo! It's late. I'll have another look in the morning
Regards
David
PS What's your source for thinking he was from Glatton?

Hi Rachel
Thank goodness he had a wife called Comfort as I was struggling!
In fact if his wife wasn't so distinctive I'd have said there were two people; Edmo(u)nd born Sudborough Northants in 1851 and 1861; then Edward born Glatton Hunts 1871-81-91. It's almost as though he had a mid life personality change.
At least his age is consistent, pointing to 1818/19 birth.
It's not even as though Glatton and Sudborough are adjoining villages, either side of the Hunts/Northants county boundary. They're 15 miles apart!
Could the illegitimate Edward son of Alice*, baptised on 4 May 1817 be him, and he invented a father when he married? It's happened before.
I'll do some more digging!
Regards
David
Later .... his first daughter on the 1851 was named Alice Ann. Named after his mother.....?? If you could show that Alice the mother was from Sudborough...
I've just noticed that Alice had an earlier child Hannah Knight Houghton chr 6 Nov 1814 at Glatton. Perhaps a little lateral research is in order. Perhaps Alice was trying to drop a hint to future family historians as the father of Hannah!
I'll keep adding to this message with random thoughts!
Is there any clue from the witnesses on the marriage cert?
Hannah was the first Houghton baptism in Glatton, in 1814. Another Houghton family then turned up in the parish, Reuben and Susan who baptised 4 children 1832-7. In 1851 they were living in Stilton Hunts where Reuben was aged 67 born Staple Beds - the only place that I can find that this might be is Staploe which was a hamlet of Eaton Socon. Susan 63 was from the same place but I cannot find their marriage in either Hunts or Beds. They could well be a red herring!
I wonder if there's anything in the parish chest at Glatton which might shed some light - bastardy proceedings or settlement certificates/removal orders. I've looked on A2A but found nothing.
The reason I couldn't find any Houghton burials in Glatton was because my source stops at 1800. After 1800 it's best to check the BTs which have been filmed by the LDS, and this should probably be your next step, as you would be able to rule out Edward if he was buried in Glatton.

Hi David,
Thanks for your help on this, it is always good to get someone else's opinion.
In answer to your question about witnesses on the marriage certificate, these were Amos Tansley and Esther Humphrys. I was also very interested to know about the earlier child of Alice Houghton, Hannah Knight Houghton, as Edmund and Comfort's eldest daughter was actually called Alice Hannah Houghton not Alice Ann as stated on the 1851 census (spooky!) Could this mean that he actually knew he had a sister?
I have been looking again at the Sudborough Census for 1841 and I have found a John Houghton and I know this may be a coincidence but he was a lodger with James and Alice Wright (similar to Knight), could this be the married Alice Houghton.
I will have a look and see if I can find a Hannah Houghton anywhere.
Thanks again.
Rachel
