1840s Death Registrations--were they always recorder
« on: Friday 02 March 07 14:28 GMT (UK) »

My gggrandfather  William Mann became a father in 1844 when his son William was born in the July in Pimlico. However by 1851 his wife Mary is widowed and living in Kensington. Having searched Ancestry and
Free BMD I cannot find a death for him. Was it necessary to register a death in the 1840s.

I have already got the death cert for this one and it is the wrong one. It was quite disappointing.

Thanks for looking it up though

The death should have been registered and may well have been, but there are known problems with the indexes, see

Did he definitely die. Just because it says she widowed, might not be the case.
One of my own g.g.grandmas said she was widowed in one census, bit I found that hubby had gone off to live with another woman.

Thanks for that thought . On his sons marriage cert in 1868 he is said to be deceased. Could be they disowned him. It would be good to uncover a bit of scandal

Have you tried looking for William from 1851 onwards?  Where was he born and what year?
