I have found this entry in 1841 ........
Hackwood Lane, Basingstoke All born in County Thomas Marlow 55 Ag Labourer Harriot 30 Joseph 20 Elizabeth 20 David 15 Emma 12 John 4 Sarah Wise 4 HO107/385/2 16/26
This family was transcribed as Marton and somebody has at some time submitted an error to suggest that David should be David Marlow. It's unfortunate that the submitter either hasn't left any contact details or hasn't allowed contact, but it's a possible indication that somebody else is researching this family.

Hi, Thank you for the reply.
Hackwood Lane is definitely the right area, an extension of Cliddesden Road. Or vice versa.
The ages all vary from the 1851 but the names seem to be correct except the first one of Thomas Marlow. This is a new name and the age differs, but he has the same occupation as the James Marlow (Head) in the 1851 census age 70years.
Harriot is probably Harriett 38yrs in 1851 and 30 yrs in 1841? Joseph age 20yrs in 1841 and 33yrs in 1851 Elizabeth (another new name for me) David age 15yrs in 1841 and 23yrs in 1851 Emma (another new name) John (another new name) Sarah Wise age 4yrs (another new name, but has the surname I am looking for with Harriett, above)
Am I right in assuming that there is no surname given for Harriett?
If you look at my post of yesterday, " 1851 census for Basingstoke" I think you will agree we are probably looking at the same family.
Questions, questions. Our ancestors didn't like to make things easy for us did they?
Thank you again. Tom

Hi Tom, I found that 1841 family too - I'd say it was them, with the usual anomalies !
The surnames are all the same indicated by the Enumerator's 'ditto' or 'do' .... the Sarah Wise caught my eye as she want transcribed, but deffo with the family household on the original page ...

Curious - I could not find a baptism for Harriet to confirm the father's name for you. So I searched for David and found these children baptised, parents James and Hannah:
William 26 Feb 1815 Joseph 16 Nov 1817 Elizabeth 15 Dec 1820 David 11 Jan 1824 Sarah 4 Mar 1827 Emma 11 Dec 1829
There was also a George baptised in Wield but he may not be their family, although I don't know who else he might belong to.
A Sarah Ann Wise was baptised in Basingstoke in 1837, parents Isaac & Harriet Wise. This would appear to be their only child.
Isaac Wise married Harriet Marlow 11 May 1834 in Basingstoke. Death of an Isaac Wise registerd in Basingstoke Mar qtr 1838 Gro Ref Vol 7 40
So Harriet must be around somewhere. I don't seem to be able to find a marriage for James & Hannah Marlow either. Hmm.

Hi Little Nell,
Thank you for your time again. As you say very curious how this is panning out.
According to the 1851 census, Harriett was born in Wield, Hants and her father James in Winslade, Hants. Also you say that Sarah Ann Wise was the only child of Issac and Harriett, yet in the 1851 census Harriett has a 2 year old daughter Elizabeth, born some ten years after that Isaac's death.
Were all the baptism's you found in Basingstoke?
This family really have tried to make things difficult. But not half as difficult as my fathers lot from Kent, who moved and changed the family name.
Thanks Tom

So far as the aged on any 1841 census is concerned you have to remember that any age above 15 was rounded down to the nearest 5 which should account for the anomalies.
Apart from Sarah the others have dittoes, so making their surnames all Marlow.
The presence of Sarah Wise would make me concur that this was definitely the same family.
The difference in the name of the head of the family I can't explain but you could always bear in mind enumerator's error .......

All the children's baptisms were in Basingstoke. I found the marriage of a Hannah Page to James Marlow in 1810 in Wield on the IGI. Unfortunatley the baptisms for Wield are not on the IGI , but I suspect that is where Harriet might be found sometime 1811 or 1812. George must be another child.
