He was a tax collection for the British government (I was told) and he immigrated to the US using a British Passport (dated 4-16-25) under the name Philip Reilly "with daughter" (my mother).  I understand he was one of twelve children: eleven boys and one girl named Josephine.  I think some of his brothers were named James, Joseph and John - based on some of my grandmother's notes.  He was a billiards champion around 1919.  My brother has the gold medal saying he was runner-up but my mother said the following year he was the champion.  We were also told he was the cycling champion of Europe (indoor track) and we have photos of him on a bicycle and another of him next to a large trophy. We have no idea how to find out information about him.  Oh, he married my grandmother while he was employed by the city government in Dublin, November 11, 1908 (so says the plaque on the clock).  All their children were born in Ireland but they all died in America. Thank you for trying to find out information about my grandfather.  Before my grandmother immigrated to the US in the late 1920s they lived at Parkhouse Cottage, Old Bawn Road, in Tallaught, County Dublin, Ireland.  My mother's cousin (Nora Donahue) lived at the same address until sometime in the 1950s when we lost contact with her.  When my Mother returned home to Ireland she couldn't locate her family.  She said they had lived across the road from a military fort when she was a child and that the house she was raised in had been moved to a park in Dublin.  She said it was a thatched cottage and that you could still see the mark of the bullet that hit the house over my uncle's bedroom window.  I don't know if stories like this help at all.  Thank you for any hints you can give me on finding our Irish family.  We still have their letters written eighty years ago.   Grin

Mattie Mae

I've found Philip J O Reilly and his wife Augusta on the 1911 census of Dublin for you.  His occupation is described as a clerk and they had no children yet on  2 April 1911 Augusta seems to have been running a sort of lodging house at their home in Gardiner Street

Mattie Mae,

I've been researching my wife's great grand father. His name was John O'Reilly (c1860-1900). He was a merchant sailor working for one of the steam ship companies operating out of Dublin. He and his wife, Sarah McMahon, (1871-1922) lived at 3 Upper Oriel St., Dublin. I've hit a brick wall with him. I know this is a very, very long shot but can you tell me something about the John O'Reilly who was a brother to Phillip O'Reilly. Is there anything in your Granny's notes which might relate to my John O'Reilly? Mine died at the Royal City of Dublin Hospital, Baggot St., Dublin in June 1900 from cancer of the tongue and jaw. He is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery. He and his wife had 2 children - Mary Josephine O'Reilly, (1894-1970) and Petty Officer John J. O'Reilly, (1896-1945).

Looking through the records and letters I have hasn't been helpful for you - so far.  The Reilly family were "farmers" and I can't find any connection other than many were buried at the Glasnevin Cemetery. I will keep checking and let you know if I find anything.  Thanks for asking. Mattie Mae
