I have found that all of a sudden I can't seem to change any of my file names. I go through the normal process in my file manager
Select File Rename I Get the normal "Do you want to rename the following Files Etc I Change Name in the appropriate box Hit Save Get Blank Screen
I have been trying for hours and it just wont work. I don't know when I last renamed a file so no idea when this problem started, but I have changed my file names in the past on numerous accasions without a problem.
Everything else seems fine. I can upload material. I can edit pages etc but I just can't rename my files.
Is it just me? What have I broke ............Kris

Kris
I had this problem once, and seem to recall it was something to do with file permissions. However I can't find the posts/PMs relating to it. Berlin-Bob will know (he guided me through it) - perhaps if you PM him?

Hi Bob,
My files are all -rw-r--r--
I have had no problem renaming them in the past. Everything else works fine. I can upload to the site, I can edit files, I can delete files, but I cannot rename them. Everything seems normal till I hit Save and then the screen just goes blank. Nothing wrong with the names I am using either btw - I have tried just removing a letter or adding a number in a current file name and exactly the same outcome, no matter which file I try - I have tried so many for the heck of it to no avail. It will not let me rename anything at all..........Kris

Hi Kris,
I think I may have had this too, but I don't think I bothered to find out why. I just renamed the file on my harddisk, uploaded it, and then deleted the file with the óld name.

Don't think that is an option Bob, I do most of my work on the site itself and have always been able to rename before. Now, for some strange reason as well as all my pages and pics, it wont even let me rename my guestbook, which as you know I do to get rid of the spammers....Kris

Oh Well at least it isn't just me I guess.....If that is the case Hackers could use delete or edit though. Wouldn't that be worse than renaming files .....Kris

I'm now having the same problem as Kris, in that I can't change the name of a directory in my webspace.
I want/need to do this so that my guestbook can dodge the viagra (and worse) spam - about 10 entries a day at the moment. I dread what my guest book would be like if I had a holiday where I didn't have access to a pc
I've been able to copy the files down to my hard-drive, but can I get them to upload into a new folder on my rootschat web space? [I am sure you can guess that the answer is obviously no ]
It could be an issue with file extensions - but one of the files I can't upload is ".php" which is clearly shown on Bob's tutorial as a permissible file extension. I have managed to upload ".gif" files though.
So I can't change the name of the guestbook folder (the easiest option), and I can't move the files (via my computer). Any ideas on where to go next?

Oh Julian
In a way I am glad I am not alone. Sounds like you are getting more than me and very nasty material.
Have you noticed that a lot of times no email notification is coming through when one arrives? I had someone tell me I had some a few weeks ago that had been there for days. I received no notification for them and thought the spammers had given up. I now make sure I check at least once a day just in case and quite often find something is there.
Presume Julian is the same as me downside. Nothing has changed since we last spoke. Those are the permissions we have. We can upload, delete and edit our files, but we cannot rename anything, just get a blank page every time we try. We have had no problem renaming files previously and this system of renaming the guest book has been a godsend to us with beating the spam.........Kris

What are the permissions of files on the server? Are they like below:-
drwxr-xr-x -rw-r--r--
The first one is for directory permissions. The second one is for file permissions.
Basically, if you do not have the right permissions you cannot delete or remove files.
Thanks, Downside. I have some slightly different file permissions for some of my guestbook files:
-rwxrwxrwx
-rw-rw-rw-
the first is for a ".php" file
and the second is for a ".dat" file.

I have now given up the ghost and setup a new guest book on my site. More about this on a suitable guest book thread! http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,172105.msg1244735.html#msg1244735
