Great photo isn't it?
That's his whole life, right there.
Interesting that the army allowed them to put up so many personal pics and photos, I should imagine that the pics on a soldiers' wall are a bit more risque nowadays!

During the Boer War, the 1st Bn served along with the 3rd (Militia) Bn among their duties was to guard Boer POWs on St Helena.
The Sussex Militia, formed in 1778, became in 1845 the Royal Sussex Light Infantry. In the 1881 post-Cardwell reforms, the county regiments adopted former militia units (e.g. those retained as reservists for home defence operations). The Royal Sussex Light Infantry became the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment. The 3rd Battalion volunteered for service overseas in South Africa and embarked for the Cape on 29 Mar 1901. After good service on Lines of Communication security and convoy guard duties, it returned home on 11 Sep 1902. In the 1908 Haldane reforms that included the creation of the Territorial Force (later the Territorial Army), the militias became the "Special Reserve" and the 3rd Battalion became The 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment. Throughout the Boer War the 1st Battalion served along with the 3rd (Militia) Battalion - among their duties was to guard Boer POWs on St Helena. Also serving were members of the Regiment's three Volunteer Battalions who formed three successive Active Service Companies to reinforce the 1st Battalion. This was the first time that Volunteer Units had served abroad. Some members of the Regiment rode horses and took on the role of Mounted Infantry forming mobile columns to round up Boer Commandos.

Hi Salty !
I have his birth ... but you probably already have that certificate !
Henry Garfield Gallop J/A/S/ 1867 Hastings 2b 34
but I can't find a marriage ! ( at least up to 1900 ) do you know if he did marry ? and can't find him on 1901 census ........ so that takes him to the Boer War !
The Royal Sussex Regiment left Malta on Feb 20th 1900 for South Africa
