Hello Anne,

I don't think it is an Irish name. There were none in Griffiths Valuation which took place between 1848 to 1864. I left out the De and tried Ravin with slightly better success. It showed one Ravins in Co. Waterford and the following in Co. Sligo ... one Dooravin and several by the name of Goravin. Now if you change the "i" to an "e" and search for Raven you'll find several variations ... Raven, Ravens, and Dunraven are the ones that look most likely.

Hi Christopher
Many thanks for looking up the name Deravin for me. It was a shot in the dark because the name in my family comes from the French West Indies and many Deravins have been found in the past but virtually nothing before 1793 when a Francois Deravin was married in Martinique.
None in France before that date either.
Then I wondered if the spelling was changed and it could have been Desravines etc coming from Haiti.
Then I wondered whether it was in fact an Irish name because it sounds as though it could be.
Many thanks
Anne
