Does anyone have M.I.s for Coldingham? Looking for a Mark Bell married to Christian Trumbull and their daughter Christian Bell born about 1774. Many thanks Maggie.

Thanks for the swift reply Beckey. It was always a long shot but I seem to have hit a brickwall with tracing Christian Bell! Maggie

Not sure about the surname but it could well be an error-it came from the IGI. But looking at my records I find that there is a Turnbull in there. Christian Bell was (possibly) married to Alexander Spence and they had a son b. 1804 in Allanton( also called Alexander) . All trace of Christian is then lost, and her husband is found remarried to a Margaret Turnbull by 1841 census. So I've been trying to find a death record for Christian Bell/Spence! Thanks Maggie

Thanks Beckey, I have found Alexander Spence (jnr) in Ayton in 1841 and Alexander Spence (snr) in Hutton in 1851. Spence (snr) died in Hutton in 1853- do you know whether there is a graveyard in Hutton? Best wishes Maggie.

Thanks Beckey, the Isabella in 1851 is mine, she married Alexander Spence (jnr). Alexander has not been traced in that census- but on his son's birth certificate his occupation is given as a gauger on the North British Railway, so he may well have been working away on the census night. The death certificates record them as buried in Hutton (Alexander Spence jnr.1855and Alexander snr.1856) and Ayton (Isabella 1860)so it looks as though the headstones (if they had them) have not survived. Best wishes, Maggie.

Hi maggie, not really related to your enquiry bu I have an ancestor called Frances Turnbull which was transcribed as Trumble so yours is quite possibly Turnbull, she married an Edward Common. I am also related to the bells, my mother was Florence Bell. My GG grandfather was Matthew Bell born in Benwell Newcastle. happy searching Malcolm Common
