19c Royal Marine surname change
« on: Tuesday 06 March 07 15:15 UTC (UK) »

Hello,
I have a  ancestor who changed  his surname.
My grandfather said his father changed his surname before orafter he joined the Marines.
My question is would he have to  have proof of his name change or birth certificate when he joined which was twords the latter part of the 19c.
Also the family have never had any document  of his surname change
Kind Regards!

Hi treebuster

In my experience no.  Pretty much up until the start of WW2 (1939) things were a little laid back regarding spellings of names, name changes and the like.
