Is anyone researching their Marshall ancestors who were travelling tinsmiths in Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire? My interests were in Creetown c1841/51 and then in Stoneykirk, nr. Stranraer. I should be pleased to hear from you.

I am looking for information on my Marshall line but not yet found anything only this article from the Kirkcudbright newspaper that Gadget kindly showed me giving information to some members that may be of my family but not yet proved look for the hanging of Henry Greig alias John Wilson where William Marshall and Janet Gibson are mentioned and they both give birth to a daughter Ann marshall in Miningaf in Kirkcudbright and are all tinkers but run riot in the place and are the current day ASBO's feared by the inhabitants.
If there is no connection to you then it is an interesting story to read

Yes, I had heard of William Marshall (King Billy of the Tinkers). I understood he had over 100 children, married 6 times and had several children after the age of 100! Phew! His life seemed to span the whole of the 1700s. Now I am not too sure of the facts quoted above but there must be someone out there who can confirm the details for you. He is buried in Kirkcudbright and people put pennies on his headstone for good luck.
I have only traced my Marshalls back to about 1808 or thereabouts. Alexander Marshall (born Whithorn, Wigtownshire) married Jane Marshall (born Kilmaurs, Ayrshire) somewhere. There seemed to be a quite lot of inter-marriage in those times. In 1841 and 1851 they are down as whitesmiths or tinsmiths. Their numerous children were born all over the place in Ayrshire and Wigtownshire which surely would indicate a nomadic lifestyle. Gadget also helped me with their subsequent settling down in Stoneykirk, near Stranraer.
Are there any other Marshall names you have found? Do you have any connection to Creetown or Stoneykirk? I haven't found an Ann Marshall yet in my line.
