Thomas Harding before 1851
« on: Friday 09 March 07 02:49 GMT (UK) »

I've found my Gr Gr Grandfather Thomas Harding (Aged 39) on the 1851 census (Folio Ref: HO107/1977/~102) and it states that he is a widower with four children.
I have tried to locate him (and hopefully his wife) on the Free Census Online Project (for 1841), but unfortunately without success.
I've also tried the free BMD (and not so free online BMD searches) again without success.

He was born in 1911 in Hereford, and his occupation throughout his life was an Agricultural Labourer
On the 1851 Census he is recorded as living at The Moor End, Hereford with his children:
Ann (Aged 9)
Elizabeth (Aged 7)
Rachel (Aged 5)
Thomas (Aged 1)

Any help in tracing him before 1851 would be most appreciated.
Many thanks

There's a Thomas Harding born 1811 in Bishops Frome, wife Maria born 1816, no other family.
There's also  a Thomas Harding born 1813 in Bosbury, with a household, none of which share his surname.

Yes they are the only two i can find as well.Think your best bet would be to send for one of the chilldrens birth cert to confirm Mothers name.

Hi KMO and Welsh Lady,

I think out of the two it’s going to be the first.
The year of birth is more or less what I expected and they didn’t have any children that I’m aware of till 1842. Also when he married again the name he gave his daughter was Martha Maria Harding (Martha was also his wife’s name at the time, so perhaps the middle name ‘Maria’ came from his first wife!).
However I think a birth certificate may be required to confirm.

Thanks you both for the information.
Kind regards,
Stewart

Hi Stewart,

The IGI has the baptisms of the 3 children born in Weston Beggard.  Their mother's name seems to have been Eliza.

Rachel Harding is also on the IGI, baptised in Yarkhill...

Hi MJP,

The info that you’ve found sounds exactly like the 4 children of Thomas, even down to were they were baptised. Which corresponds with their place of birth on the 1851 census return I’ve got.
If it states that their mother was Eliza, then perhaps I presumed wrong in my initial assumption and he the second not the first.
Either way I definitely need to obtain a birth certificate regards one of the children to answer this problem.

Many thanks for your help,
Stewart

Hi Stewart,

You can view this information yourself, including the baptism dates, at www.familysearch.org.  Click on "Search" tab at the top.  Then "International Genealogical Index" from the lefthand menu.  Then just enter what you know in the search screen - they should come up.   Smiley

I also tried to find a marriage for Thomas and Eliza, but nothing comes up.  The IGI is not complete though - and it is just a transcription, so errors are possible as with any other transcribed source.

Happy hunting!

Found them.
Funny thing, I searched the IGI yesterday evening with no success.
Yet there they are exactly as you said.

Info overload!!!! Huh

Thanks,

I am going for the Weston Beggard Family
Eliza and Thomas have baby Thomas baptised at WB in August 1849.
Eliza dies in Feb 1851, thus making Thomas Snr a widower on the 1851 census

I think I'll just have to stick with the birth certificate route for now and maybe the marriage date might arise at a later date

There's a weird Weston Beggard marriage in 1837, Thomas HARDMAN to Elizabeth HARDING - probably just coincidence.
