Leisten/Linsten?
« on: Saturday 17 March 07 10:19 UTC (UK) »

Trying to read a census sheet and I do not know Suffolk place names....is it Leisten/Linsten? Given as birthplace, person now in London.

My bothersome Baxters again.

Hello Nanny Jan

This is a useful site for you

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SFK/ParishIndex.html#L

I expect it is Leiston but if you want a second opinion do post the census ref and I will have a look too.

Thanks Barbara, a useful site.

Details from 1871 census Ellen Wakeling (35), with husband Frederick(38) and 4 children; Thomas (5), Frederick (1), Catherine (11) and Mary A (7).  It is Ellen's birthplace.

Family are at 39 Newmarket Terr, York Road.

RG 10 235 65 print is faint so figures might not be accurate, sorry.

Hope you can read the birthplace.

Hello again
Well my copy is clear but the writing of the place name is difficult to decipher  Huh
It looks like Linster or Liuster!
I think I would go with Leiston but can we find her on earlier or later censuses to confirm?  Where did the couple marry?

I have been trying to find this couple on other censuses.
Is the lady Ellen Baxter?  If so, I have found a Baxter family with 4 year old daughter Eleanor in Suffolk - but it is Linstead Magna.  Will post details if I am on the right track and you do not already have them. Father is John an Ag lab.

Yes it is Ellen Baxter, with father John, labourer.   I'm just trying to confirm I'm going in the right direction as I've had a few false starts with this line.

Ellen and Frederick married in 1858 in St Pancras, London.

Details of census were from a print-out and I think the ink was running low!

So it looks as though Ellen's place of birth could be Linstead rather than Leiston.  Do you have the family in 1851?

A fellow Rootschatter found an Eleanor Baxter, 14, born Cratfield as a servant with the Aldrich family in 1851.

HO 107/1803 - Cratfield  Folio 410  pg 12

Ellen/Eleanor's family still in Linstead Magna in 1851 with a few more children.

By 1861 parents appear to be living with son, d-i-l, gdaughter in Cookley.

Do you think Ellen and Eleanor are the same person?

I have an Ellen/Eleanor/Elinor in my family and she appears under different names in the censuses.
It is also a relatively uncommon name.
Cratfield is 2 miles from Linstead Magna.
Also, I see that in 1851 Hannah Baxter aged 20 is said to have been born in Cratfield. Her younger brothers are from Linstead Magna.
Overall, it looks to me as though this is the same person.  Smiley

Thanks Barbara; this is my first Ellen and so was doubtful about the name change.
It's good to have confirmation from someone with a similar situation in their tree.

Thank you so much for all your help.
