I am researching the Seagers and Stearns in Suffolk. the Seagers are mainly from Hadleigh and the Stearns from Stradbroke and Polstead/Layham.

Seagers still in the area, used to teach Seager from Boxford  Wink

Stradbroke is a long way from Polstead/Layham.

You may find the Cosford Database helpful www.cosford-database.co.uk

thanks for the welcome.

I have a question about look-ups. Can someone explain them and what information is available for those doing the looking-up?

For example I have a Daisy Seager born about 1900 in Whatfield. Her mother was a Beatrice Seager. If I ask for a look-up what am I asking for and what kind of extra information am a I likely to get?  I can find her birth on the BMD index no problem, and she's on the 1901 census.

Now I can run and hide as I feel a bit silly asking this question!

thanks

Hi Anne

Information after Civil Registration began in 1837, that is birth marriage and deaths can only be viewed by buying the certificates themselves.  The only exception to this is marriage certificates where it is possible to view a fascimile of the marriage certificate in parish records.  However, The Suffolk Record Office does not sell its holdings post 1900.  Baptisms and burials can be viewed in parish records, however, the information given is not usually as informative as that given on birth and death certificates.

Birth Certificates would contain the names of parents, maiden surname of the mother and their occupations as well as when and where the subject was born.

Marriage Certificates give the date and place of the marriage as well as the names of both parties, their ages, occupations and the names and occupations of their fathers.  There would also be the names of 2 marriage witnesses.

Death certificates give the date place and cause of death as well the name of the person who recorded the death to the registrar.

For details of just what information is available from Parish Records pre 1837 see Little Nell's interesting post.

With the exception of the 1841, censuses can be very helpful as they record the address, age, occupation and place of birth of a subject.

If you need any specific lookups for your family, please feel free to post them on the Suffolk Lookup Requests board.

I hope this helps a little.
