Hi

I started having a bit of a look at these yesterday - it is complicated by the fact that I can't find the baptisms for the girls - but Helen married in Bicester 1837 May 4th

Thomas Foster bach otp to Helen Hicks sp otp by banns
witnessed by James Greenwood & Elizabeth Hicks

here is her and daughter & sister Teresa in 1851 and 1861

from 1851 bicester
Helen Foster 30  head widow born Bicester
Helen Foster 12  dau born bicester
Theresa Hicks 27  sister millener born Bicester
Jane Mary Smith 12  cousin born Oxford Assendon

from 1861 - Luton
Helen Foster 40  dressmaker born Bicester
Helen Elizabeth Foster 21 millener born Bicester
Theresa Hicks 36  sister millenerborn Bicester
Thomas Hicks 21  brother visitor born Kent Gravesend
Emily Croft 17  serv

Note 'brother' Thomas - I don't think he was her brother, I am fairly sure he was her nephew, perhaps she said brother's son and the emumerator misheard.  I am fairly sure this is him with his parents and siblings in 1841 & 1851

from 1841 - Gravesend Milton Gravesend  Kent
Thomas Hicks abt 1811  Tailor N
Mary Hicks abt 1811    n
Henry Hicks abt 1836 n
Edmund Hicks abt 1838    n
Thomas Hicks abt 1840  Y

from 1851 census - Deptford

Thomas Hicks 41  tailor Oxfordsh Bicester
Mary Hicks 41  Hants Andover
Henry Hicks 15  Middx ??
Edmund A Hicks 13  Middx ??
Thomas W Hicks 11  Kent Gravesend
Edwin Hicks 9  Kent Gravesend
Edward I V Hicks 4  Kent Gravesend
Arthur P Hicks 11 Mo  Kent Gravesend
Sarah Golding 61   Hants Andover

Helen is consistant with her age in the census I have looked at making her born about 1821 - a Thomas born 1810 could not have been her father

baptism from Bicester
Thomas Hicks was baptised 1810 Jan 17th s/o Thomas Clark & Elizabeth Hicks

also

1815 Feb 26th Edmund Henry s/o Thomas & Elizabeth Hicks - taylor

- Elizabeth is probably the Elizabeth who was witness at her wedding - Thomas who I believe was her father was already dead

Burial at Bicester 1836 June 14th Thomas Clerk Hicks aged 49 - opposite the church

from 1841 Bicester

Eliza Hallowell abt 1811 Baker Y
George Hallowell abt 1831 Y
Charlotte Hallowell abt 1833 Y
Elizabeth Hallowell abt 1836  Y
Elizabeth Hick abt 1796  Dressmaker  Y
Tresia Hick abt 1823 Y
Helen Foster abt 1818  Y
Helen Foster abt 1838  Y
Rebecca Brabyn abt 1793  Y
William Packwood abt 1811  Y
Ann Packwood abt 1816  Y
Harriett Packwood abt 1841  Y

from Oxfordshire marriages index
1809 April 11th Thomas Hicks of Bicester =
Elizabeth Collingridge at Godington

Hope this all makes sense

Hi

Cheesy  I think I have found Elizabeth in 1841 - I went looking for the family of Jane Mary Smith who is with Helen & Teresa in 1851 aged 12 - and this was the most likly candidate in 1841,  so if that is Elizabeth we know now that she wasn't married before 1841

from 1841 - Pyrton  Oxfordshire

Mary Smith 26 FS N
Thomas Smith 4  Y
Jane Smith 2  Y
Catherine Smith 6 months  Y
Elizabeth Hicks 22 FS Y

Debbie  -  thanks again - getting info about Elizabeth is good as she was my gr.gr.grandmother - I do have a marriage certificate for her daughter, Katherine Theresa Bamford which was witnessed by Helen Elizabeth Foster, Elizabeth's niece and cousin of Katherine I think!!  Katherine was born in 1844 at Bicester (mother given as Elizabeth Bamford, formerly Hicks and father as George Bamford)   I have never been able to find anything about him other than that he is stated to be a butler on Katherine's birth certificate and a steward (deceased) on Katherine's marriage certificate.  He remains my brick wall.   I really have appreciated your help           grossan

Hi - me again  Smiley

I think I have an idea about why there are no baptisms for the Hicks girls at Bicester - I suspect their mother was Catholic - and in the case of marriages of mixed religons it was usual for the girls to be brought up in the mothers religon and the boys in the fathers - hence there are only baptisms for the 2 sons of Thomas & Elizabeth

I looked a bit more at the Smith family of Pyrton - who I found Elizabeth Hicks with in 1841

from 1851 Pyrton

Edward Smith 42  Coachman Hanington Cambs
Mary Ann Smith 40  Rudgely Stafford
Henry Smith 14  Pyrton
Catherine Smith 10  Pyrton
Helen Smith 7  Pyrton
Walter Edward Smith 4  Pyrton

from 1861 Pyrton
Edward Smith 52  Coachman cambs Avington?
Mary A Smith 50  Rudgely Staffs
Ellen Smith 17
Walter E Smith 14

Marriage 11th May 1834 Stoner Catholic Church
Edward Smith to Mary Ann Brabyn

The surname Brabyn also crops up in the 1841 census when there is a Rebecca Brabyn in the same household as Elizabeth, Teresa & Helen - I suspect that Rebecca may have been Elizabeth nee Collingbridge's sister.

The two girls Mary Smith & Elizabeth Hicks both give their occupation in 1841 as female servants  and they are living very near to Stoner Park which was the home of Sir Thomas Stoner (Lord Camoys) and a well know centre of the Catholic faith in Oxfordshire.  Mary and Edward were married in the church there.

I am afraid I am becoming a little unsure wether there ever was a George Bamford   Butler/Steward   - I have checked all the marriages of George Bamford's in the complete indexes to marriages between 1841 and 1845 - there are only 7 and not one of them has a corresponding entry for an Elizabeth Hicks.   It may well be a case of 'the butler did it'  but I don't know who the butler was.  I have not yet been able to locate Stoner Park in the 1841 census to see which staff were there - it is either very badly indexed or it has been missed.  I have put a queery in the look-ups section in the hope that someone else can find it.

These are a few more of my thoughts - I hope you are not offended at my suggestion that Elizabeth may not have been married, I really can find no evidence for it.

Hello Debbie - not offended at all but I am, having read your detective work, also wondering if the elusive George Bamford was in service at the house you mentioned.   Elizabeth's second marriage (presuming at the moment that it is her second) was to a William Ross Collis who, incidentally, was also a witness at the marriage of Katherine Theresa Bamford in 1869 at Christ Church, Luton.   IGI record shows ELIZABETH BAMFORD (FORMERLY HICKS) for the marriage to William Ross Collis.
The plot thickens!       Thanks again for your interest - it is great having someone else who knows their way around  the pitfalls etc. helping in the search.    I do appreciate your unselfish timegiving       grossan

Debbie  -  the IGI wording is actually  ELIZABETH BAMFORD OR HICKS and marriage was at Saint Mary, Aylesbury, Buckingham on 09.08.1852  and I think Elizabeth died in 1887 aged 75 at Luton.     grossan

Hi  - Yes I saw that IGI record,  and we know that George Bamford is named as the father on Catherine's birth and marriage certificates,  but I am wondering if he might have been an invention on the part of Elizabeth and/or her family.  I also think the occupation he is given as butler might be a clue - so far I have totally failed to find either Stoner Park or indeed the Stoner family who own it in the 1841 census, I really wanted to find out who their butler was, in 1851 it was Henry Seddon aged 38 born Lancashire, he is married and his wife Mary is also living on the estate.  The facts remain we can't find a marriage, or a death, or a likely candidate in the 1841 census for George Bamford which is strange.

Undecided

I have had chance this afternoon to look at the Hicks family further back in the Bicester registers

Baptisms from Bicester

1785 Elizabeth als Betsy d/o Thomas & Elizabeth Hicks
1787 Thomas Clarke s/o Thomas & Elizabeth Hicks
1789 Sarah d/o Thomas & Elizabeth Hicks

marriages from Bicester
1784 Thomas Hicks otp to Elizabeth King otp by banns
witnessed Edward Thurland & Ann x Burdett

1810 Jan 25th Thomas Foster otp to Sarah Hicks otp
witnessed William Phillips, Eleanor Davis, Mary Burgess by lic

burials from Bicester
1801 Elizabeth d/o Thomas & Elizabeth
1821 Thomas Hickes aged 67 clerk of this parish which situation he filled with much
rectitude of conduct for 33 years)
1837 Elizabeth aged 77 of the Causeway

NB there is a will at Oxford RO for Thomas Hicks the elder gent who died in 1821

there is a baptism in 1756 for Thomas s/o Thomas Hicks which I am fairly sure is the one who died in 1821 but before that it gets a bit muddled - there seem to be at least two Thomas Hicks floating around - I am looking for a way to sort the families out

Hello again Debbie - there seem to be so many Thomas and Elizabeth Hicks that it's going to take some sorting out and what did the butler see?!   Thanks for still looking - you've obviously got more expertise on this sort of thing than I have - I wish I was more clued up as to how to find the necessary information but I'm learning and seeing how you are able to delve into so many different sources has shown me I have a long way to go!!  Hopefully I will improve as I go.  Look forward to hearing from you maybe again     grossan

Debbie - would it be possible for you to let me have the details you found of Elizabeth Hicks' brothers?  I am still trying to piece together all the other information you so kindly found for me and collate it into that branch of my tree - many thanks      grossan

Hi Grossan

Yes here they are - baptisms from Bicester
1810 Jan 17th Thomas s/o Thomas Clark & Elizabeth Hicks
1815 Feb 26th Edmund Henry s/o Thomas & Elizabeth Hicks - taylor b 24

Have you seen the Stoner in 1841 thread in the lookups?  Jackie (JMP) kindly went to her library to check some further resources and it seems that the 1841 census for Stoner Park itself is indeed missing,  she couldn't find a burial for George Bamford though

All the best

Debbie - thanks for your reply and the information.  I have just looked at the Stonor Park correspondence - what a lot of time and effort done by you and Jackie - I really appreciate it and am sorry you didn't find the nitty gritty bit  i.e. any record of George Bamford but it is just so heartening to know that there are such nice people around who are willing to help others when they can.  I have now become cynical about GB and think it was a name plucked from the air for convenience sake - was that lawful - to have it entered into the registration of the ensuing child's birth details?   I will keep looking somehow but am not at all hopeful of finding anything as I believe your thorough search really cannot be bettered.
Kindest regards   grossan
