Debbie - thanks again - getting info about Elizabeth is good as she was my gr.gr.grandmother - I do have a marriage certificate for her daughter, Katherine Theresa Bamford which was witnessed by Helen Elizabeth Foster, Elizabeth's niece and cousin of Katherine I think!! Katherine was born in 1844 at Bicester (mother given as Elizabeth Bamford, formerly Hicks and father as George Bamford) I have never been able to find anything about him other than that he is stated to be a butler on Katherine's birth certificate and a steward (deceased) on Katherine's marriage certificate. He remains my brick wall. I really have appreciated your help grossan

Hello Debbie - not offended at all but I am, having read your detective work, also wondering if the elusive George Bamford was in service at the house you mentioned. Elizabeth's second marriage (presuming at the moment that it is her second) was to a William Ross Collis who, incidentally, was also a witness at the marriage of Katherine Theresa Bamford in 1869 at Christ Church, Luton. IGI record shows ELIZABETH BAMFORD (FORMERLY HICKS) for the marriage to William Ross Collis. The plot thickens! Thanks again for your interest - it is great having someone else who knows their way around the pitfalls etc. helping in the search. I do appreciate your unselfish timegiving grossan

Debbie - the IGI wording is actually ELIZABETH BAMFORD OR HICKS and marriage was at Saint Mary, Aylesbury, Buckingham on 09.08.1852 and I think Elizabeth died in 1887 aged 75 at Luton. grossan

Hi - Yes I saw that IGI record, and we know that George Bamford is named as the father on Catherine's birth and marriage certificates, but I am wondering if he might have been an invention on the part of Elizabeth and/or her family. I also think the occupation he is given as butler might be a clue - so far I have totally failed to find either Stoner Park or indeed the Stoner family who own it in the 1841 census, I really wanted to find out who their butler was, in 1851 it was Henry Seddon aged 38 born Lancashire, he is married and his wife Mary is also living on the estate. The facts remain we can't find a marriage, or a death, or a likely candidate in the 1841 census for George Bamford which is strange.

Hello again Debbie - there seem to be so many Thomas and Elizabeth Hicks that it's going to take some sorting out and what did the butler see?! Thanks for still looking - you've obviously got more expertise on this sort of thing than I have - I wish I was more clued up as to how to find the necessary information but I'm learning and seeing how you are able to delve into so many different sources has shown me I have a long way to go!! Hopefully I will improve as I go. Look forward to hearing from you maybe again grossan

Debbie - would it be possible for you to let me have the details you found of Elizabeth Hicks' brothers? I am still trying to piece together all the other information you so kindly found for me and collate it into that branch of my tree - many thanks grossan

Debbie - thanks for your reply and the information. I have just looked at the Stonor Park correspondence - what a lot of time and effort done by you and Jackie - I really appreciate it and am sorry you didn't find the nitty gritty bit i.e. any record of George Bamford but it is just so heartening to know that there are such nice people around who are willing to help others when they can. I have now become cynical about GB and think it was a name plucked from the air for convenience sake - was that lawful - to have it entered into the registration of the ensuing child's birth details? I will keep looking somehow but am not at all hopeful of finding anything as I believe your thorough search really cannot be bettered. Kindest regards grossan PS I like your new logo
