Hi Ian,

I thought I could help with the Penn baptism ( I have the CD) but I think I've only muddied the waters!!   Roll Eyes

There is no baptism for John Lewin in Penn at all.

There is -

Sarah Lewin baptised 20 Nov 1793, daughter of John & Sarah Lewin.

John & Sarah's marriage:-

4 Sep 1785 banns  John X (made his mark) Lewin , bachelor otp (of this parish) = Sarah X Babb, spinster otp. Witnesses: Thomas Hancock, Ann X Hancock.

Other than that, there are some Luen baptisms :-

1 Nov 1793 Ann d/o Thomas & Mary Luen
29 Oct 1794 Rachel      "               "
10 July 1796 William     "               "

Sorry, it seems that John and Sarah Lewin moved on after the baptism of their first child.

Well further info here about the family of Lewin

John Lewin married Elizabeth Spicer 10th Apr 1826 Penn

David Lewin Born abt 1831 Penn son of John and Elizabeth
Elizabeth Lewin born 1834 Penn daughter of John and Elizabeth

In the 1841 Census Elizabeth is on her own aged 40 andthe surname is spelt Luin
with son David aged 10
John must of died between 1834 to 37 as i cannot find a death for him.
So i shall have to search around the area for John Lewin.

Just to add to this

from family history on line two deaths here
1. Name John LEWIN Date 14 Jun 1843 Aged 85 Place High Wycombe Description All Saints Denomination Anglican County code BKM

2. Name John LEWIN Date 2 Jan 1841 Aged 49 Place Iver Description St Peter Denomination Anglican County code BKM
(Could this be the death of my John Lewin !) (if so he would be born abt 1792)

1841 Census
HO 107 / 55 / 3 Folio 9 page 12

John Lewin aged 80 Labourer born in county
Sarah Lewin aged 65 born in county....
so it appears that John and Sarah did move to High Wycombe

1851 Census
Chipping Wycombe ? HO 107 / 1719 folio 160 page 39

Sarah Lewin aged 89 Widow Born Penn Bucks.
and she died in 1853 Wycombe.

This does sound quite good perhaps John was Baptised in High Wycombe or Chipping Wycombe, Are they the same place ?

Hi Ian,
I've just quickly glanced through your posting, and this may not help, but have you tried Penn Street?. Just to confuse matters, both Penn and Penn Street have a Holy trinity church.
Kind regards, Kim.

Thank you Kim
I was not aware of another church or even of the place PENN STREET !
so the birth could still be in Penn (St) or even High Wycombe.
so if anyone does come across John Lewin born abt 1790 to 1800 i would be very grateful for it.
Thank you

Hi Ian,
Did you know there's a will for a John Lewin of Great Missenden on the National Archives Documents online site? The date is 1833. Don't know if it'll help, but you never know.....

Just checked the Bucks RO site and Penn Street did not start recording births until 1849 and marriages until 1850. There don't appear to be any non conformists churches in Penn.

Okay, checked Penn & HW and could not find a John Lewin at all.

Found an Eliza Spicer baptsied 2/4/1799 High Wycombe to William and Elizabeth.

The only John Lewin I could fine of a similiar age was John Lewin to Richard and Elizabeth in 1791but in Datchet.

Siblings Rebecca 1793, Richard 1796, Charlotte 1798 and jane 1803.

Sorry I can't be of any help. BTW Chipping Wycombe was replaced by High Wycombe according to the PRs. But there is a West Wycombe.

Thank You Jo
well at least there is good news that you found Eliza Spicer (YIPPEEE)
I am now so close to compleating my 4X gt grandparents.

Now as for John. could they be non conformists well yes they could well be!
Annie Lewin my Gt Grandmother was married in a Baptist Chapel in Burton Latimer, Northants. she married into the Ashley family which was quite a non conformist family as it is today !
There are hugh links to the Baptists, but i did not expect all of my branches to be non conformists, which does seem to be going that way. so if they are it is something i would not of expected, but i would not be surprised.
Yes i know i should of mentioned it, but i just didnt think this side would be Non conformists.

I will put John Lewin on my list for next week or later this week if I am lucky.

If you need any help going further back, just let me know. The FHS boast that they have 99% of the marriages if you want me to check for the marriage of Elizabeth and William Spicer.
