Hello Gary, We are distantly related by marriage. Most of the Whilemans are connected in some way. My mother's sister, Lily Saunders, marr Wilfred Whileman 1918-1982, son of Frank 1874, son of Thomas 1848, son of George 1815. Your line comes down from George 1815 to George 1857 (who married twice) and he was my Thomas 1848's brother.
I will send you a PM with my email address. Regards Vicwinann

Hello, If your friend is serious about researching his family then believing stories of what people have told him without any proof will lead to sorrow, I am afraid. There are many Whileman researchers and a very big tree has been put together with lots of branches. No, the surname is not French as far as I know but there are several variations and mistranscriptions. Whileman, Wileman, Wilman, Wylman, Wyleman, Witman amongst others. It may have been anglesized from the Latin "son of Gwilliam (William)" but that is not proven. Forget spelling when you are researching back. I have found the same surname on on single document spelt in three different ways for the same person.
Before your friend even thinks of looking back that far he needs to prove child to parents, to grandparents, and so on, with certificates, censuses, Wills, and other documents, linking them all together. The adage "Go from what you know back to what you don't" holds true. Please tell him not to rely on what other people tell him or what he finds on the net without documentary evidence. Yours Vicwinann

Hi
It has been a while since i posted on this board but i pride myself as been one of the more senior researchers of the Wileman/Wildman family of Measham.
My line igoes back to John Wileman born in Measham in 1815. He had a brother called george Wileman who by the looks of it changed his name to Whileman and he moved to Clay Cross. He is the father of most of the Whileman family that we know today. John went on to marry Elizabeth Wildman of Measham in the 1830's and they had several children. John and George were the son's of Thomas and Ann Wildman / Wileman both of Measham.
During my research which includes many a visit to our National Archives in Kew, Numerous visits to Measham and a couple of visits to the Leicestershire and Derbyshire records office's I have never found any mention of Wileman, Wildman or Whileman been derived from french origin.
Hope this helps and i would love to hear from anyone by personal email
